Morgan Gibbs-White bursts Wolves’ bubble, and leaves Nuno Espirito Santo on the brink

Wolves cut the gap to safety at the weekend, but that gap has increased once more due to Morgan Gibbs-White.

There were scenes of jubilation on Saturday as Wolves got their first win of the season against West Ham United.

Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-chan and Mateus Mane were all on target, as Wolves gave their best performance of the campaign to date.

What do you make of Morgan Gibbs-White’s reason for leaving Wolves?🤔

“I started the Chelsea game and then for the next match I was on the bench. You need to give young players confidence to show what they are about. That is why I didn’t see a future at Wolves any more.”

The result breathed new life into a lot of fans, with many feeling slightly more optimistic about a great escape.

But last night, something happened which was far from ideal for Wolves, with Morgan Gibbs-White proving decisive for Nottingham Forest.

There were plenty of Wolves fans’ eyes on last night’s Premier League game between Nottingham Forest and West Ham United.

Wolves’ win over the Hammers meant that the gap to safety was cut to 12 points.

But frustratingly, that gap has now increased back to 15 points, with Forest beating West Ham 2-1 at the London Stadium last night.

West Ham actually took the lead after Forest defender Murillo scored an own goal after 13 minutes.

But Nicolas Dominguez equalised after a corner by Elliot Anderson.

A draw would have been ideal for Wolves, but it ended up being all three points for Forest, with Morgan Gibbs-White tucking home a penalty on 88 minutes after Alphonse Areola fouled the midfielder.

And there was particular frustration for Wolves fans, who felt Areola’s challenge on Gibbs-White was very similar to when Andre Onana clattered Sasa Kalajdzic at Old Trafford in August 2023. Wolves did not get a penalty that night.

With that successful spot-kick from Gibbs-White, Forest moved onto 21 points in what is a crushing blow for Wolves, who simply must now beat Everton tonight to stand any realistic chance of staying up.

Nuno Espirito Santo facing West Ham sack

Not only did that one kick from Gibbs-White sting Wolves, but it also may end up costing Nuno Espirito Santo his job.

Nuno was appointed West Ham manager at the end of September, after the club sacked Graham Potter.

But he has come under increasing pressure after failing to get results, and earlier this week, journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Nuno was on the brink of the sack, suggesting he had one more game to turn things around.

It could well be that Nuno – still adored by many Wolves fans – is relieved of his duties.
