Mick McCarthy’s winless Wolves run still confuses him to this day

Mick McCarthy’s spell at Wolves delivered countless fond memories for fans, but there have also been some bad ones to look back on.

McCarthy’s time on the touchline gave him love for Wolves, and to this day, he is still a fan of the club.

While he no doubt has come to the understanding of why his time at the Old Gold ended, there is one thing that still bugs him to this day.

The former Wolves boss still cannot quite believe how his side went on a long stretch without winning a single game.

Mick McCarthy has said he is still not quite sure what happened at Wolves when the Old Gold went on a long stretch without winning a single game under his management.

Speaking on his podcast, The Managers, McCarthy was hoping Harry Redknapp could help him resolve his confusion.

The former Wolves boss said, “Can I just ask, you know, when you said you went on that bad run, looking back on it now, can you even imagine why it happened?

“I know it’s an obvious question, but I’ve experienced it myself. We won the league at Wolves, and then I didn’t win a game for 13 matches. We’d had a great start, and I just couldn’t get my head around it.

“We tried everything, changed the coaching, changed the management, everything. Went out, stayed in, had a drink, didn’t have a drink, trained harder, trained less. Nothing worked.

“So I’m asking you because I still can’t figure out how a team that won the league with 90-odd points could suddenly hit a run like that.”

Redknapp related to McCarthy’s confusion, with the former Wolves man later saying, “I could not get my head around it.”

McCarthy seemingly has his numbers mixed up as well, with his longest winless run at Wolves being an 11-match stretch across all competitions in the 2011/2012 season.

The run started with a 4-1 loss to Manchester United on the 4th of December and ended with a 2-1 win against Queens Park Rangers on the 4th of February.

McCarthy would be sacked the very next game after losing to West Brom 5-1.

The reason for Wolves’ winless run in the Premier League this season is more obvious

This season has also seen Wolves go on a winless run, but they have picked up wins in the cup competitions through it, unlike McCarthy’s time.

The Wanderers are still without a win seven games into the Premier League season, and the reasons are much clearer to see.

A mix of new signings struggling to adapt, Jorgen Strand Larsen getting injured, and some poor in-game management from Vitor Pereira have resulted in just two points for the club.

At least the issues are much clearer to see, and hopefully Pereira can resolve them sooner rather than later.

The first chance for a win comes against Sunderland, but an ominous record for Wolves versus the Black Cats puts it at risk.
