Former Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has given his reaction to the appointment of Julen Lopetegui by the club.

Wanderers finally announced the Spaniard as Bruno Lage’s successor yesterday morning after he had initially turned the club down.

Lopetegui had said no at first in order to spend some time with his family. His father has also not been very well.

But the picture changed last week, and reports surfaced that Wolves were back in talks with their number one target.

He will now start work at Molineux a week tomorrow, and his first game will be against Everton on Boxing Day following the World Cup.

The general consensus so far has been that Wolves have got themselves a really good coach.

He’s vastly experienced and by many accounts, a great man as well as a manager.

Fans are hopeful he can turn things around for Wolves, and McCarthy believes it’s a solid appointment.

The former Wolves head coach said: “I’m glad they’ve finally got a manager. I was in Wolverhampton this week and that was all the chat to me.

“I’m delighted they’ve finally got a good manager with a good reputation.

“It’s wonderful for him, to join the club and then have six weeks training. I don’t know how many players they’re going to lose to the World Cup. But to be able to get your ideas across and train them for six weeks and then come back… it’s a fabulous opportunity for him and great for the club as well.”

McCarthy did also state that, while Lopetegui seems like a great appointment, you can’t be confident he will definitely turn things around.

The suspension of the season for the World Cup is actually something that could really help Wolves.

As McCarthy says, he’s going to come in and have some really valuable time to work with his new players and get everyone familiar with what he wants.

Wolves will probably only be losing a few players to the tournament.

So Lopetegui will get to work with nearly everyone, and hopefully the response will be good.

The players have shown fight in the past couple of games. It’s just about improving the defending again and obviously, increasing the goal output.
