Wolves take on Chelsea on Saturday evening, and Mick McCarthy is not totally putting down Wolves’ chance of a result.
This season has been far from successful, and the ten-game Premier League run that has left Wolves bottom of the Premier League resulted in Vitor Pereira losing his job.
The search for his replacement has continued to heat up, but no real contender has emerged.
Gary O’Neil appeared to be leading the race for a sensational return to Molineux. However, O’Neil withdrew himself from the running, leaving the club searching for another option.
Another former Wolves boss, Bruno Lage, emerged as a candidate, but links were played down.
And on the topic of former Wanderers managers, Mick McCarthy believes Wolves can cause an upset against Chelsea, but only if one thing happens before the game.

Mick McCarthy predicts Chelsea vs Wolves
It seems unlikely that Wolves can get a result against Chelsea, but in the world of football, stranger things have happened.
Mick McCarthy expects the Wanderers to fall to defeat when they travel to Stamford Bridge, but he has given them a chance if a decision on the manager is made by then.
Speaking on his podcast The Managers, the former Wolves boss gave his predictions ahead of the weekend, including Chelsea vs Wolves.
McCarthy said, “Chelsea to beat Wolves. Chelsea have only lost one in five. They beat Spurs away and played very well. Chelsea play in Europe on Wednesday, but I can’t see that upsetting them too much unless Wolves get the new manager bounce back, of course.”
Chelsea did unexpectedly draw away to Azerbaijani side Qarabag on Wednesday, and that could drop the Blues’ confidence a small bit heading into the weekend.
However, Mick McCarthy’s hope for Wolves does not look likely to come true based on the most recent news about who will take charge.

James Collins will have to provide ‘new manager bounce’
With no new manager confirmed yet, under-23s head coach James Collins is set to take to the dugout on Saturday.
We are not quite sure if this is what Mick McCarthy means, but we suspect he was not referring to an interim or caretaker option.
Either way, Collins will have it all to do as Chelsea are by no means an easy opponent.

There will not be much hope among fans, as Wolves will be the heavy underdogs.
As long as Collins chooses a solid starting XI and the players put in a hard-working performance, they will come back from Stamford Bridge with some positivity.
A display to be proud of, and one that offers hope this season can be turned around, is all that can be asked for in this situation, and a shock result would be exceptional for the mood at Molineux.
Following the match, the international break will no doubt be a busy period for the Old Gold as their hunt for Vitor Pereira’s successor continues.
