Michael Carrick responds when asked if he wants return to management, amid Wolves links

Wolves are searching for a new manager after sacking Vitor Pereira – and Michael Carrick was quizzed about his next plans last night on Match of the Day 2.

Wolves parted ways with Pereira on Sunday morning, following the 3-0 defeat to Fulham.

It has been a disastrous season for Wolves, who are rock bottom of the Premier League with just two points and still winless.

Fosun had so badly wanted for Pereira to turn things around.

But in the end, Pereira simply had to go. Wolves did not have a clear identity under him, he wasn’t picking up results, and he had lost the fans.

Now Wolves are looking for a replacement.

And on Wolves’ list is Michael Carrick, who was last night asked about what he plans to do next.

Carrick has been out of work since the summer, after leaving Middlesbrough following a two-and-a-half-year stint.

He impressed initially, guiding the club to the play-offs in 2022/23.

But Boro missed out on the top six in each of the past two campaigns.

Yesterday, following Pereira’s sacking, Carrick was linked with Wolves along with Gary O’Neil and Rob Edwards.

Incidentally, he appeared on Match of the Day 2 last night, and was asked about what his next plans are, with host Mark Chapman even referencing the fact he’s been linked with Wolves.

He said: “I’m enjoying some time out at the moment. I think I’m probably watch as much football now as I’ve ever watched really, with a free eye and kind of nothing on it.

“Still learning, still trying to improve, but I’m enjoying doing things like this (punditry). It’s a change, spending time with the family. I’ll see what’s next.”

Carrick keeping his cards close to his chest

It didn’t really sound like Carrick was throwing his hat into the ring for the Wolves job.

But it has to be said, he was likely never going to outright declare his interest in the job there and then on national TV.

Games managed – 136
Wins – 63
Draws – 24
Losses – 49
Goals scored – 220
Goals conceded – 177

It remains to be seen if Carrick is someone Wolves will want to speak to regarding the head coach position.

But certainly, whoever does come in has a seriously hard job on their hands.

But with Carrick, Wolves at least know that he’s got experience of managing in the Championship. So in the long term he might be a good option to take the club forward if relegation happens next year.
