Matt Jarvis offers Wolves relegation verdict after latest defeat to Liverpool

Wolves have endured a tough season and are currently just two points above the relegation zone.

Wanderers have really struggled at times in 2024/25, but there has been greater optimism of late with Vitor Pereira now at the helm.

Pereira was backed well in January, with three new signings coming in.

And Matheus Cunha signed a new contract, which Jermain Defoe suggests was Wolves’ best business of all.

The performance against Liverpool was really good despite the 2-1 defeat – especially in the second-half.

Liverpool didn’t have a shot in the second-half against Wolves – remarkably, it was the first time the hosts didn’t have a single shot in a half at Anfield in the Premier League since 2003/04.

But Wolves are still flirting with danger down a the bottom, and Matt Jarvis has now given his thoughts about the club’s fate this season.

Wolves should not be where they are given the quality of players they have on paper.

But they’ve underperformed for a lot of the season, and the previous manager should have probably been sacked weeks before he actually was.

Wolves’ position is precarious, and it seems that two of Wolves, Ipswich Town and Leicester City will go down along with Southampton.

But Matt Jarvis just can’t see his former club going down.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the latest defeat to Liverpool, he said (via BBC Sport): “You’ve got players in the team with great ability and it’s just the confidence to go and do it.

“Liverpool probably dropped off a little bit but you can see it’s there with Wolves. I’ve been saying it all year – they have the players and the quality to stay up, they’ve just got to do it and that’s the hardest bit about Premier League football.

“You can’t just do it in 15-20 minute spells and expect to win games. They have to do it for 90 minutes.”

The two major reasons why Wolves can stave off relegation

Things are a little dicey at the moment, but there are a couple of key reasons why Wolves should stay up.

The first is that Wolves have Cunha, who is a real game-changer and someone who can provide something out of nothing. Wolves’ relegation rivals don’t have a player like this.

Secondly, the signing of Agbadou looks to be huge for Wolves.

Fans will have everything crossed that the injury Agbadou sustained against Liverpool is not serious, because the Ivorian has looked a superb addition so far, and has brought new confidence to the backline.

Agbadou has already won Player of the Month award at Wolves, underlining his quality and importance.

If those two players can be on the pitch as much as possible for Wolves between now and the end of the season, there shouldn’t be any worries at the end of the campaign.
