Matt Doherty shares what is actually ‘priceless’ for Wolves with Rob Edwards appointment

There have been a lot of positive words from the Wolves side about Rob Edwards’ appointment as new manager – and Matt Doherty is the latest player to react.

The Rob Edwards era has now officially begun, and he has an almighty task on his hands.

Vitor Pereira left Wanderers with just two points on the board from 11 Premier League games, and Edwards will need to create history if he is to keep the club in the top-flight.

But Edwards firmly believes in the squad, otherwise he would not have taken the job.

It’s going to be a tall order, but Wolves are confident Edwards can galvanise the squad, and a strong January window can also change the picture.

But one who reckons this is a positive appointment by the club is Matt Doherty, who knows Edwards better than most having previously worked with him briefly.

Matt Doherty reacts as Wolves appoint Rob Edwards

Matt Doherty has certainly seen a lot at Wolves across his two spells at the club.

He’s someone who has experienced real highs, and will be itching to experience them again before he leaves.

And he believes that will be possible under Edwards, under whom he has worked before.

He told Wolves’ official website: “He took a couple of games I managed to play in when he was interim manager. Obviously I was impressed with him at the time. Even before he took over them two games – he likes to play with a full-back inside, which teams kind of do now. He did have that idea in mind a long time ago.

“For him I think it’s a dream job. He wants to be here and loves the club that he was willing to leave a pretty good situation for us, and I think it’s going to be great for the club.

“He’s still young now as a manager, he was a young coach then learning the game. But he just had something different about him. You kind of felt it when you were around him. He had different ideas that you hadn’t seen before. He was like a new generation coach.

“I’m excited to see his work on the training pitch, I’m excited for him to be back in the Premier League and back at a club he loves.

“And that makes a difference. He cares, he has a feeling for the club. He knows what the fans want and need, and what the club needs. That kind of thing is priceless. You can’t buy stuff like that. You can’t buy someone who’s been in the building before and know how the club works and how it needs to work to be successful. It’s exciting.”

Doherty could be Wolves regular again under Edwards

The words of Doherty here will certainly encourage Wolves fans, who are hoping that a bit of invention might result in some improved performances that get points on the board.

And the appointment could see Doherty become a regular in the Wolves starting XI again.

Doherty was left out of Wolves’ squad a few times by Pereira this season, with many fans questioning those decisions.

When Wolves came calling, the decision was clear for Rob Edwards

“Wolves is a special club for me. It’s where I grew as both a player and a coach, it’s where my family calls home. It has always been my dream to come back and these opportunities do not come around too often.”

But you get the sense that Doherty will not miss a squad under Edwards, who will surely look to lean on a player he already knows a fair bit about.

Edwards has already called for leadership at Wolves, and Doherty will surely become a key figure under the new boss.

We may even see Doherty become a regular starter again on the right of a back three, with Edwards no stranger to using that system.
