Matt Doherty sends cheeky 2-word message after Wolves’ win over West Brom

Wolves secured a huge win over West Bromwich Albion yesterday in the fourth round of the FA Cup – and yesterday evening, Matt Doherty sent a cheeky message on social media.

Gary O’Neil‘s popularity with the Wolves is at an all-time high, after he masterminded a 2-0 win at the Hawthorns.

Wolves had not won away at West Brom since 1996, but got the better of the Baggies thanks to goals from Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha, who was branded ‘excellent’ by O’Neil after the game.

It was by no means a superb performance from the visitors, but it was never going to be about how Wolves played, and simply always about winning.

Many Wolves players have posted on social media after yesterday’s game, but Matt Doherty probably gave the best reaction to the win…

Sunday’s derby match was fierce at times and of course at one point in the second-half, emotions spilled over in the crowd, an the game was temporarily suspended.

Thankfully, after a delay of over half an hour, the game resumed and Wanderers held out for the win.

West Brom looked threatening on occasion, but ultimately they were unable to really fashion clear-cut chances in the game, with the three Wolves centre-backs rock solid.

There were top performances across the board for Wolves, and Matt Doherty was perhaps the best he’s been since he re-signed for the club.

The Republic of Ireland international was responsible for setting Pedro Neto away for the opening goal, and he did a solid job at left wing-back.

Following his contributions to the game, Doherty took to social media after the game to send a cheeky message. Uploading a black-and-white picture of Neto celebrating his goal with his fingers in his ears surrounded by several other Wolves players, he said ‘Light work’.

A huge win

This was not Wolves’ best performance of the season by any means, but it is undoubtedly the most satisfying result of the campaign so far.

It was unthinkable to lose, but to actually win the game in convincing fashion and banish that record of having not won at the Hawthorns since 1996 in the process was brilliant.

What O’Neil is doing at Wolves is nothing short of incredible. To have Wolves in the fifth round of the FA Cup and just three points off seventh place in the Premier League is something no fan could have predicted with any kind of confidence when he came in as Julen Lopetegui’s replacement.

We will see what Wolves are able to do in the second half of the season now. There will still be bumps in the road, but what a start it has been.
