Matt Doherty names one key thing Vitor Pereira has brought to Wolves – and it’s a poor reflection on Gary O’Neil

Things are looking up at Wolves after the recent arrival of Vitor Pereira.

Wolves have struggled for most of the season and currently sit just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

But Pereira has started well at Molineux since replacing Gary O’Neil a few weeks ago.

He won his first two games, then got a draw with Tottenham Hotspur, before losing his first game against Nottingham Forest on Monday night.

Against Forest, Pereira was forced to name a makeshift defence, with injuries to Nelson Semedo, Craig Dawson and Toti Gomes.

In the end, Forest picked Wolves off clinically, and Doherty admitted he might have done better on the second goal.

But after the game, Doherty also spoke very positively about Pereira, revealing one key difference between Wolves under him and Wolves under O’Neil.

Before Pereira arrived at Wolves, there was a real problem with players being overly emotional.

We saw how Mario Lemina flipped out after the defeat to West Ham United as he tangled with Jarrod Bowen after the final whistle.

We then saw Rayan Ait-Nouri get sent off after the final whistle against Ipswich Town for getting involved in a scuffle.

Matheus Cunha also got a suspension from the FA for his antics after that game.

And we also saw Jose Sa confront an individual in the South Bank at half-time against Bournemouth.

These things did not reflect well on O’Neil, who had seemingly lost control of his dressing room. But Doherty says Pereira has instill a bit more discipline around the player since he came to the club.

Speaking after the defeat to Forest, Doc said (via BBC Sport): “He has brought his own way of playing, his own discipline and his own style. He has got ways to play that were different than before but all managers are different.

“We have a lot of Portuguese-speaking players in the squad and he is probably able to get his message across. I think he has brought a bit more discipline around the place and on the training ground. We just have to pick ourselves up for the FA Cup at the weekend.”

A poor reflection on O’Neil

It’s really interesting to hear Doherty make this admission and undoubtedly, it’s not something that reflects well on the previous manager.

Under O’Neil towards the end of his reign, control and discipline definitely went out of the window, and those things took away from the football.

Pereira has come in and got the players to lock in and refocus – and we haven’t seen any signs of ill-discipline.

Of course, positive performances and results have helped with that.

But Wolves were beaten 3-0 on Monday night by Forest. It’s the first time there’s been a bit of adversity under Pereira, and – despite the frustrating nature of the defeat – there were no signs of any disciplinary issues, which is positive.
