Wolves’ dismal season continued at the weekend with another defeat to Brentford – and one Matt Doherty admission is major cause for concern.
A Keane Lewis-Potter brace was the difference at Molineux, as Wolves turned in another dreadful performance.
The Old Gold again went in at half-time level pegging, as has been the case in every Rob Edwards game so far, but went on to lose.
Wolves fans, genuinely, how worried are you now about Derby’s 07/08 points record (11)?
The Old Gold have equalled the lowest ever PL points haul at Christmas… 🥴
Poor defending was Wolves’ undoing once again, and the misery was compounded towards the end when Jorgen Strand Larsen’s penalty was saved by Caoimhín Kelleher.
Wolves have the joint-fewest points ever at Christmas with just two on the board, equalling Sheffield United’s record.
After the game, Matt Doherty spoke to the media – and one admission he made really does speak volumes about the psychological state of this squad.
Matt Doherty admits Wolves are fearful of going ahead

Against Brentford, there was never any danger of a Wolves win.
While they remained in the game, it was the same old story with Wolves unable to threaten up top.
Then, lapses in concentration resulted in the concession of two goals. But as soon as the first one went in, the contest was essentially over given Wolves’ lack of bite.
After the game, Doherty made a suggestion about the squad that really is deeply concerning.
He said (via E&S): “We were in the game for 60 minutes, we feel like we’re doing OK, and then we concede the goal and it just feels that we conceded the same goal again after that. It’s just a bit too easy for them. It’s just not good enough.
What do you make of Matt Doherty’s post-Brentford remarks? 🤔
It was an emotionally-charged interview…
“You can see the stadium is nearly empty at the end, it’s not full at the start, but we’re just lacking belief that we can actually win the games. We’re afraid and scared to win the game, almost nervous about actually going ahead in the game and having to try and hold on. I don’t really know what else to say. We’ve just got to somehow keep trying to find something.
“When you’re playing at home in a situation like this, that’s where you’ve got to show real character, when the atmosphere isn’t great, and the energy is not in the stadium – and we completely understand why.”

Bleak times
Following this suggestion by Doherty, it is difficult to see where the points are going to come from for Wolves.
Seemingly there is a major psychological issue right now, and that is perhaps understandable given the run Wolves are on.

Joe Hart sent a stern message to the Wolves players following the defeat to Brentford and upon hearing Doherty speak about not being remembered as cowards.
The former Premier League goalkeeper urged the players to step up, park their egos, stop thinking of themselves and play for the badge.
It seems a lot of them are inhibited right now, and this simply has to change if Wolves are to not go down with a whimper.
