Matt Doherty in no doubt about Wolves’ fate now in 2025/26 under Rob Edwards

Rob Edwards is in place at Wolves – and Matt Doherty is adamant he knows what the club’s fate will be this season.

It has been a sorry campaign so far from Wolves, who have taken just two points from 11 games in the Premier League.

Fans knew it would be a hard start. But that haul of points is really disappointing, and Vitor Pereira’s position as head coach had become untenable.

When Wolves came calling, the decision was clear for Rob Edwards

“Wolves is a special club for me. It’s where I grew as both a player and a coach, it’s where my family calls home. It has always been my dream to come back and these opportunities do not come around too often.”

Wolves swooped for Edwards, who now has the job of his life.

Wolves were the only club Edwards would leave Middlesbrough for, and plenty of people are hoping he fails after walking away from the Riverside.

At Molineux though, there is confidence that this is a smart long-term appointment.

And for Matt Doherty, it’s clear what the outcome of the Edwards appointment will be.

Edwards obviously has an affinity with Wolves having played for the club and having held coaching roles.

The new manager already knows the club, and that has been part of the thinking when it came to hiring him.

Edwards is personable, and is someone who is very good at connecting people.

He’ll need to galvanise the squad, which will no doubt be lacking confidence after the awful start under Pereira.

And for Doherty, who’s told Edwards he can lean on him for support, this is an appointment that will save Wolves’ bacon.

He said (via Wolves official): “They have to be (players on board). They better be. They’ve got no choice but to be. We’re in a poor spot right now, but it’s far from over. There’s still a lot of positive possibilities for us, and me for one firmly believes that.

“Then it’s up to us as leaders in the group to convince everybody else that there’s still a long way to go in the season. I do truly believe that. I have the belief that Rob is going to get us out of this and then we can remember everything that’s been said now and give them all the thumbs up when we stay up at the end of the season.”

Edwards facing tough start at Wolves

Things could very well get worse before they get better, despite the uplifting appointment of Edwards.

Edwards has a very difficult first five games as Wolves manager, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Arsenal all up next.

Are you confident Rob Edwards will help Wolves avoid relegation?

That is why the start Wolves have had this season is much worse than last term under Gary O’Neil, who could at least say his list of fixtures was more difficult at the start.

Edwards has been dealt a tricky hand going into the festive period. So it’s not out of the question Wolves could be made to wait further for that elusive first win.
