Matt Doherty drops big hint over Matheus Cunha’s future at Wolves, ‘pretty soon’

Wolves have certainly done some very good transfer deals in recent years.

At the moment, Wolves’ squad his littered with talented players, many of whom have found their mojo again under Vitor Pereira.

Pereira is getting a tune out of many players right now, after he replaced Gary O’Neil earlier in the season.

Fans are extremely excited about what the future holds for the team under the Portuguese.

But it’s possible Wolves could be losing several key players again this summer, with Fosun set to adopt a self-sustaining model.

And one man who is also certainly going to leave is Matheus Cunha.

Cunha is strongly linked with Manchester United right now, and the feeling is that he will seal that move.

Cunha is inarguably one of the best players Wolves have had in recent history, and Matt Doherty has made an interesting admission about the Brazilian in a new interview.

It has been pretty clear for a while now that Cunha is a Champions League calibre player.

The Brazilian joined Wolves in January 2023 and after taking that first half-season to acclimatise, he has been a revelation at Molineux.

For Doherty though, his quality was always clear – and the defender has admitted his surprise that Cunha actually wound up at Wolves in the first place.

He said in a new video for Sky Sports: “Sometimes it takes you to move away from a place to find yourself, to realise what you need to do. Maybe to get back to a place.

“Like he should be playing week in, week out for them, for Atletico Madrid. You know what I mean? For whatever reason, that’s not the case.

“But I’m pretty sure that he’s going to be playing at the highest level imaginable, Champions Leagues, stuff like that pretty soon. (He has) Huge potential.”

Cunha belongs in the Champions League

Cunha has made a handful of appearances before in the Champions League with Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig.

Realistically, that is a competition he should be playing in regularly given his quality.

Seemingly though, there is a chance he may not do that next season, if United don’t win the Europa League.

It’s thought Cunha is sold on the United project and that Champions League football is not an absolute must for him to make that particular move.

It would be a shame to see him not playing in the biggest club competition next season, but there’s always another club could steal in for him if United don’t qualify through the Europa League.
