Matt Doherty, Conor Coady and Nuno Espirito Santo all in Wolves agreement after trio met for dinner recently

Wolves have certainly had some hardships in recent times.

In 2024/25, Wolves have a very turbulent campaign, with the team having a horrible start to the season under Gary O’Neil.

He was sacked in December, and then Vitor Pereira came in and turned things around.

In the end, Wolves finished 16th in the Premier League table, which is the club’s lowest finish since returning to the top-flight in 2018.

Wolves have been on the decline since Nuno Espirito Santo left the club in 2021, and Pereira is essentially now tasked with trying to bring back the good times.

Fans feel he has the potential to do so, but know he won’t achieve much unless he is backed well by his superiors.

The Nuno days were certainly a lot of fun, and Matt Doherty has revealed that he actually dined out with his former boss recently.

Doherty has made an appearance in the Wolves Official podcast to discuss a variety of topics with Dave Edwards and James Bird.

And one such topic was his time under Nuno.

Doherty is the only current Wolves player who experienced the Nuno era at Wolves, and it’s clear he has a very good relationship with him.

And it may warm some Wolves fans’ hearts to know that Doherty actually met Nuno for dinner recently, with Conor Coady also joining them.

He said: “I went for dinner with Nuno a few weeks ago, me and Coads met up with him and all the coaching staff in Birmingham. Coads wanted to know how he managed to get him in as a middle centre-back!

“I was saying to him, I want to play left-wing back! I was saying to him I want to cut in and shoot with my right foot all the time. He was like ‘No, you’re not doing that’.

“He just changed the whole mentality, we obviously knew that he had been at big clubs before so, it was a bit of a perfect storm for him. We were just living and dying off every word that he said. We were just listening to everything he said. The players they brought in were probably the same.

“He had the presence about him. A bit like Mick had at the start. You’re thinking, you don’t really want to mess around with him too much.

“Like I said, it was just a perfect storm. Everything just clicked, we were all at great ages where we hadn’t even reached any of our potential. And that just started off, honestly, we even said it when he had dinner the other day, and even they said it as well – it was the best time of theirs still, and they’re doing quite well at Nottingham Forest now.

“So it just goes to show how special it was.”

Vitor Pereira can emulate Nuno at Wolves

Nuno is still highly regarded at Molineux for the brilliant five years he had at the club.

Nuno is currently working his magic at Nottingham Forest, but he still has a way to go to match what he did with Wolves.

Things have gone south at Wolves since he left, but Wolves fans have been very encouraged by what they have seen so far from Pereira.

Wolves fans have loved Pereira’s passion, and believe he really could get Wolves back challenging for European football if given the right support.

That connection he’s built with the supporters so quickly is really good to see. And Dave Edwards reckons Pereira is out to emulate Nuno by establishing a connection with the Wolves fans.

Having been languishing for the past few years, fans really would now like to see Wolves start looking up again, rather than over their shoulder. And under Pereira, there is surely a good chance.
