Matheus Nunes shares what the Wolves squad are saying about this season

Matheus Nunes’ first season in England waste what he thought it would be as he faced a relegation battle.

Following an extremely poor start under Bruno Lage, the season did take a turn for the better under Julen Lopetegui as Old Gold secured a 13th place finish.

This however isn’t a position the Portuguese midfielder who also had interest from Liverpool last summer.

Now with the new season rapidly approaching, Nunes has set high ambitions which he says, are shared by the squad.

Nunes sets season target

In an interview reported by the Shropshire Star, Nunes has revealed the target him and his teammates have for the upcoming season.

He highlighted the fact Wolves must be ambitious and be able to fight for a top eight finish.

“We have enough quality players to try to stay in the top eight,”.

Nunes continued, “Look at Newcastle, nobody gave anything for them in the beginning, but look where they are now. That has to be our aim.

“I’m not the type of person to aim to be in 15th place. I think most of the players, if not everyone, have that mindset as well. We have to aim high and anything which comes is going to benefit us.”

His ambitious aims will be a huge green flag for Wolves fans who are keen to see the team rise back up to a European football level.

The midfielder struggled in the Premier League last season following his £38million move from Sporting Lisbon to the Molineux.

The Portuguese star believes he will improve

Nunes has also suggested he is in line for some self improvement this season claiming he has learned a lot over the past year.

Speaking about last season, Nunes said: “It was a tough year overall, for all of us, not only for the players, but also for the club and for the fans, everybody around the club.”

“I thought we had players to compete for the European championships, but it was a learning year, it taught me a lot, to be more tough, a hard worker even more because you need to keep your head up when the storm comes and that’s what I tried do every time we had a loss, every time we were struggling.”

He summed up the season in general by stating:

“Overall, it was tough because I didn’t expect us to be in the relegation zone.”

Nunes along with anyone else associated with Wolves will be keen on enjoying a better season in 2023-24.
