Match of the Day pundits disagree with Julen Lopetegui over Nelson Semedo penalty incident in Wolves vs Leeds

Match of the Day pundit Ashley Williams disagreed with Julen Lopetegui about the penalty incident involving Nelson Semedo for Wolves against Leeds United.

Many Wolves fans are waking up today feeling frustrated, with the club losing 4-2 to the Whites.

It was a game full of controversy.

In the end though, Wolves were not good enough in either box to warrant coming away with any points.

The game could have been very different had one decision in the first-half gone their way.

At 1-0 down, Wolves were attacking and Semedo made his way into the area.

He got to the ball first and then went down under a challenge from Junior Firpo.

The full-back made an attempt to play the ball but didn’t get there first and caught the Portuguese defender.

Nothing was given, and Lopetegui said after the game his side should have had a penalty.

On Match of the Day though, Ashley Williams felt referee Michael Salisbury made the right decision.

He said: “I don’t think the argument is there. There seems to be some contact from Firpo, but not enough. I don’t think that warrants a penalty. You can see, yeah OK he touches Semedo a little bit. But I wouldn’t say that’s a penalty. Obviously the manager is going to say otherwise.”

Wolves finished yesterday’s game with two red cards.

One for Jonny for an awful challenge on Luke Ayling.

And one for Matheus Nunes, who was an unused substitute. He was dismissed for apparently pushing to the linesman when arguing about Leeds’ fourth goal.

Wolves should have had a penalty for challenge by Leeds defender Junior Firpo on Nelson Semedo

It is difficult to see where Williams is coming from on this.

There is clear contact by Firpo on Semedo. He goes to kick the ball and Semedo gets there first, resulting in Firpo kicking his leg.

It is remarkable to think that something like that would not be given, just days after Wolves received an apology for not getting a penalty against Newcastle United when Nick Pope brought down Raul Jimenez.

It is not quite as a clear-cut as the Jimenez-Pope incident. But it’s still a spot-kick.
