Martin O’Neill sends Vitor Pereira plea to Wolves fans amid calls for sacking

Martin O’Neill has sent a message to Wolves fans amid unrest at the club and doubts over the future of Vitor Pereira.

Supporters have started to turn on the Wolves head coach, and tensions reached boiling point when the Portuguese manager clashed with Molineux’s South Bank.

The scenes were unsavoury, and former Premier League striker Charlie Austin was left feeling uneasy about the ramifications.

Former Premier League manager Martin O’Neill has now chimed in, and he has told Wolves supporters to do one thing when it comes to their head coach.

Martin O’Neill defends Vitor Pereira after rocky Premier League start for Wolves

Martin O’Neill was speaking on TalkSPORT about the situation currently unfolding at Wolves, and the 73-year-old has leapt to the defence of Pereira.

O’Neill, who has previously managed Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, among other clubs, is well aware of the pressures when managing a team at the bottom of the league.

Just last week, O’Neill believed Wolves could survive relegation, and once more, he has remained positive about the Old Gold despite them being in last place.

O’Neill said, “To get that sort of abuse now, at this minute, it’s really, really difficult. You have to win football games; I’ve said this at the beginning of every conversation I have. Managers know that they have to win.

“But it does feel strange that you have to try and defend yourself and actually see what you’ve done only a couple of months ago before that. Wolves have had no luck whatsoever in games. There was a game, I think it was against Tottenham Hotspur, that they could easily have won and conceded at the last minute.

“And that draw was like a defeat to them. They could easily have won. They fought back from 2-0 behind against Burnley. They hit the bar with a free kick as well. That goes into the net and there is three points on the board.

“And just nothing is going right for them at this minute. But they still have the wherewithal to do it. And I, you know, I urge Wolves fans, stick with him.”

Martin O’Neill was not the only one who jumped to the defence of Pereira, with Alan Pardew sympathising with the head coach’s situation.

However, what the pair do not understand is that the results are only a part of the frustration and that the 57-year-old has played a part in them.

More than results have been concerning with Vitor Pereira this season

This season Vitor Pereira’s decision-making has let him down.

From strange choices in his starting XI to poor in-game management, the Portuguese head coach is far from blameless for the current situation.

You can do a big song and dance about the owners, and yes, while they are the overarching problem at Molineux, Pereira has done himself no favours.

The struggles have been a combination of both the board not backing Pereira as strongly as they should have, and the head coach then making a mess of what was already a bad situation.
