Manchester United grant Matheus Cunha the same wish he requested at Wolves

Manchester United are set to grant Matheus Cunha his wish after he joined the club from Wolves this summer transfer window.

The Brazilian forward left Molineux to be the first summer signing for Manchester United.

Cunha played a vital role in Wolves’ survival push last season under Vitor Pereira as he scored 17 goals and provided six assists.

He brought about a reported fee of £62.5 million for Wolves after United splashed the cash to sign him, believing he can be a player that reinvigorates the club from their decade-long slumber.

The 20-time English top-flight champions have put a lot of trust in Cunha, and now they have granted his wish, which could excite many United fans.

Matheus Cunha has been given the number 10 jersey at Manchester United

It is being reported by Ben Jacobs on X that Cunha will be given the number 10 jersey for the upcoming season.

This means he will take the jersey off Marcus Rashford, who is currently still listed as the number 10 on the club website.

Cunha being handed the number 10 jersey means that a Rashford exit should be imminent, particularly as he has been reported all summer to be searching for a move away, or he will have to make do with another number should he stay at Old Trafford.

The decision to hand him the number 10 means he follows in the footsteps of many Manchester United greats, including Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Bobby Charlton, and Dennis Law.

Cunha will continue to wear number 10 after having the same number at Wolves

Wolves made it an event when Cunha was given the number 10 jersey at Molineux ahead of the 2024/25 season following Daniel Podence’s switch to Saudi side Al-Shabab.

Cunha had initially worn the number 12 jersey when he joined the club from Atletico Madrid in January 2023 until that point.

To celebrate him changing jersey number, the club held an event at the Wolves megastore, where Cunha surprised fans by purchasing shirts for them with his new squad number on the back days before the Newcastle United match.

The club also allowed fans that had purchased that season’s jersey with Cunha 12 to return it and exchange it for a shirt with the correct number.
