Julen Lopetegui is open to playing Toti Gomes and Max Kilman together at the back for Wolves.
Currently, it’s an all-English partnership at centre-half, with new signing Craig Dawson coming into the side a couple of weeks ago.
January arrival Dawson made his debut against Liverpool.
He was superb against the Reds, and even scored.
He then followed that up with a great display against Southampton.
It looks like Dawson and Kilman may well be the pairing of choice moving forwards, with Nathan Collins and Toti playing second fiddle.
Collins would be the third-choice, and Toti will now have slipped to fourth following Dawson’s arrival.
Lopetegui has been speaking about his centre-back options, and is pleased with the balance he has now, having two right-footers and two left-footers.
The head coach stated though that he would happily play any combination of the four.
He says specifically he would not be put off by playing Kilman and Toti together, despite them both being left-footers.
He said (Express & Star): “We have played with Max and Toti at Nottingham Forest, two left-footed players. Why not?
“Sometimes when you play with two left centre-backs people are surprised. But a lot of teams play with two right centre-backs and it’s normal.
“For me, it’s the same. They have different characteristics because they have a different body shape to play, but in the end it’s the same.”
Julen Lopetegui comments will please Wolves defender Toti Gomes, with Max Kilman a regular
Lopetegui has a point – there isn’t really any difference between playing two left-footers playing together and two right-footers.
It is simply that two left-footers playing together is far less common. So when we do see, it can feel ‘unusual’.
But it’s good that Lopetegui will play whatever combination he feels necessary. He seems to have trust in all his options.
The manager’s comments will likely be received well by Toti.
You would think that Kilman’s status as a regular pick would simply mean the Portuguese hardly plays.
But it sounds as though Lopetegui would have no issues getting him in alongside the 25-year-old if the situation called for that.
