Liam Keen shares how the Wolves board are currently feeling about Gary O’Neil

Wolves fans are concerned at the moment after seeing the team take just one point from a possible 18 this season.

The fixture generator was very unkind to Wolves though, with the club having already faced the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Liverpool.

But there is still disappointment for some about the way Wolves have started.

Wanderers have been in positions to win games, but have yet to do so.

There is a reasonable opportunity for Wolves to get points on the board this weekend with Brentford the opponents at the Gtech Community Stadium.

But it will still be tough – and another defeat for Gary O’Neil would crank up the pressure.

But seemingly, his job is still not in too much danger as things currently stand.

O’Neil has had a fair amount of credit in the bank from last season.

The English tactician guided Wolves to a 14th-placed finish and got Wolves scoring more regularly than in previous seasons.

The club may well have finished higher up had they gotten the rub of the green over some controversial VAR decision, and if key players had stayed fit.

Between what he did last term, and the fact there have been some positive signs so far in 2024/25, the Wolves board isn’t panicking just yet about the current situation.

Journalist Liam Keen said on the latest E&S podcast: “I understand it (the concerns) from a Wolves fans point of view, you don’t want your team to be 20th, you don’t want to be losing games.

“From an internal point of view, Matt Hobbs and Jeff Shi have spoken publicly about it. Matt was on the radio as well the other day talking about it. They’re pretty clear, the two of them. And it’s as we understand it as well.

“Regardless of the result at Brentford, he’s going to be OK.

“As long as the performances are staying pretty decent – there has to be a trend of performances getting worse for anything to change. Wolves are relatively comfortable at this moment in time, they’re not looking to move Gary O’Neil on.

“They’re pretty clear that they’ve got a plan they’re sticking to. They’re aligned with what he wants to do and they’re taking the fixtures into account. The performances for the most part have had some positives in them, and unless they start to dip severely alongside the results then there isn’t really a question at the moment.

“Wolves are pretty comfortable where they’re at (he still has the dressing room). The players are happy with Gary O’Neil and trust and believe in him and enjoy working with him. If and when that changes, perhaps we’ll have a slight change in approach but at the moment, there’s no question that Gary O’Neil is going anywhere.”

Journalist Ben Jacobs also claimed a couple of weeks ago that O’Neil was not under pressure at the moment.

O’Neil needs to start picking up points

This should probably not come as too much of a surprise, given what was said by Hobbs and Shi last week and also the fact O’Neil did sign a new contract before the start of the season.

They believe in him, and he’ll be given time to try and turn things around.

As Keen says, the performances so far this season have contained positives, and there is a belief that Wolves can build on those positives.

But O’Neil could do with getting points on the board soon just to relieve a bit of that pressure.

It should get a bit easier for Wolves after the international break (with the exception of Manchester City in the first game back), so hopefully we’ll be seeing some better results.
