Liam Keen drops big new Gary O’Neil update ahead of Wolves’ game with Ipswich as Jeff Shi claim also made

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil remains under severe pressure after another defeat in the Premier League last night.

Wanderers fell to a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, with Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen scoring either side of Matt Doherty for Wolves.

Wolves had a number of decisions go against them in the game. The corner from which West Ham scored their first goal should not have been a corner.

Then, there was a foul on Santiago Bueno in the build-up to West Ham’s second goal. And in the closing stages of the game, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was stepped on in the area – but it was waved away by referee John Brooks and the decision was upheld by VAR.

Former midfielder Karl Henry described the officiating in West Ham vs Wolves as ‘inexcusable’.

Many thought losing to West Ham would be the final straw for Fosun with O’Neil but earlier today, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook reported O’Neil would likely get the Ipswich game.

Now, E&S journalist Liam Keen has offered an update.

Tonight, Liam Keen has reported on X that O’Neil isn’t just set to get the Ipswich game this weekend.

But he’s also in line to take future fixtures.

He writes: “Gary O’Neil is set to stay on as Wolves head coach for the Ipswich game and the foreseeable fixtures, depending on results. As it stands, that will only switch if there is a late change of heart from the top.”

In his article, Keen says O’Neil ‘retains the trust of the dressing room’.

It’s stated that O’Neil will be in the dugout as normal against Ipswich ‘unless chairman Jeff Shi has a late change of heart’.

It’s previously been reported that Wolves have been looking at potential replacements.

Wolves may be having new manager search issues

We know that the Wolves owners and Matt Hobbs really like O’Neil and are desperate for him to turn things around, but this is an extremely bold position to take.

One does wonder if the board is now taking this position because they have been having difficulty finding someone who actually wants the job.

Realistically, right now, it is not an attractive job.

Gary O’Neil record at Wolves (2023-present)
Games managed – 62
Wins – 20
Draws – 11
Losses – 31
Goals scored – 93
Goals conceded – 115

Wolves are facing a relegation battle and there is a huge amount of work to do to pull the club away from danger. No manager wants a relegation on their CV.

It’s also fairly well known that managers at Wolves in recent years have complained about recruitment.

If someone is to come in, they are going to want to be backed fairly heavily to try and turn things around.
