Lee Naylor stunned by one decision O’Neil made for Wolves during Bournemouth defeat

Wolves went back to losing ways in the Premier League on Saturday, falling at home to Bournemouth 4-2.

Gary O’Neil’s side were comfortably beaten in the end, but gifted the Cherries their goals on a frustrating afternoon.

At one point, Bournemouth fans chanted at O’Neil asking him what the score was, with even some Wolves fans joining in.

Many Wolves fans really now want to see O’Neil get sacked by Fosun, but one would imagine he’ll get the Everton game that’s coming up next Wednesday.

O’Neil came under-fire from some for his team selection against Bournemouth, after he stuck with Mario Lemina at centre-back again.

Lee Naylor has now questioned why O’Neil didn’t move the captain out of the backline after a tough start to the game.

After Wolves had beaten Fulham 4-1, there was so much praise for Lemina and Toti Gomes.

But the pair were all over the shop against Bournemouth. In the opening couple of minutes, they failed to deal with a ball over the top, with Toti bringing Evanilson down for the first penalty.

Lemina just didn’t look comfortable at all, and Lee Naylor just couldn’t believe O’Neil left him in the backline for the whole game.

He said: “My question is why haven’t you changed it in the first-half? Because everyone can see the weakness.

“I knew there was going to be a change at half-time. If you want to keep Lemina on, then you put him in midfield. Then you put a proper defender on. One that can at least keep the shape and one that can demand from others.

“When we had a throw-in down here, Semedo is totally out of the question and the player’s got a free throw into his front man. That can’t happen. A central defender won’t let Semedo do what he did.

“By coming inside him and coming across him. He’ll say ‘No! Stay in your position, stay in front of the forward’. Lemina’s not saying that to him. I can see, I’m looking at him. He’s not demanding from him, because that’s not his norm.

“It was very concerning that didn’t get changed. Especially when he had the personnel on the bench to change them for.”

O’Neil should have moved Lemina out of defence

O’Neil may wish he would have moved Lemina out of defence in hindsight. And he may wish he did it in the first-half.

He probably wasn’t the worst performer for Wolves on the day. But £10 million signing Lemina just didn’t look comfortable against the Cherries.

It was concerning that O’Neil didn’t make the change in the first-half, and it showed a lack of ruthlessness on the part of the manager.

Ruthlessness is probably something these players need right now, because the situation is very concerning.

Should O’Neil fail to get a win against Everton, Fosun may well finally decide that a managerial change is necessary.
