The biggest headache for Bruno Lage right now is undoubtedly who to replace Romain Saiss with.
The star has now departed for AFCON, and is set to miss a handful of games for Wolves.
Saiss has been in fantastic form for Wolves so far this term.
He has started every single Premier League game so far, and regularly drawn praise for his performances.
He has definitely been one of the team’s most consistent and reliable performers.
Saturday will be the first time this season that Saiss won’t be in Wolves’ backline in the Premier League. And Lage has some thinking to do.
For yesterday’s FA Cup match with Sheffield United, Lage started Fernando Marcal on the left of the back three as a direct replacement for Saiss.
The Brazilian had a couple of sticky moments. But wasn’t too bad in a position he played a quite a few times for Lyon before transferring to Wolves.
He left the action at half-time as a precaution.
Joao Moutinho replaced him, which saw Dendoncker move into the defence.
He went to the right of Conor Coady, with Max Kilman switching to the left.
The 24-cap Belgian has operated there many times before for Wolves. And he probably just edged Marcal against the Blades.
Leander Dendoncker should get the nod over Fernando Marcal against Southampton
It really is a tough one to call.
Dendoncker probably shaded Marcal against Sheffield United.
But it could be that Lage doesn’t want to move Kilman out of a position he has absolutely excelled in so far this season.
Perhaps the Belgian is a better bet though as he is better on the ball than Marcal, who got caught a couple of times yesterday.
Lage wants Wolves to have the ball more and keep possession better. Dendoncker is more composed and will likely help the team to do that better.
Dendoncker is also considerably taller than Marcal. It would be nice to see Wolves still have some height in the team after losing Saiss.
