Ki-Jana Hoever reportedly expected to be on same level as Nelson Semedo at the start of the season

Wolves defender Ki-Jana Hoever reportedly thought he and Nelson Semedo would enter the 2021/22 season on equal footing.

The 2020 signing from Liverpool made headlines at the weekend for bearing the brunt of Bruno Lage’s frustrations.

The manager was asked about Hoever’s injury after the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

And Lage took the opportunity to lay into the youngster, suggesting a lack of preparation was why he got injured.

He then suggested there were other young players not training in the way he expects.

The fiery comments really came out of the blue, and it’s the first time we have seen anything like this from Lage who was clearly very angry with the result and performance on Saturday.

It remains to be seen if that will be Hoever’s last appearance for Wanderers.

Obviously he went off injured, and he might not immediately be available for selection.

The Birmingham Mail has today brought a report about Hoever following Lage’s outburst.

Apparently, Hoever has been frustrated this season at playing fiddle to Semedo.

The player is said to have overlooked potential loan moves away from the club in January in favour of staying and fighting for his place.

The most interesting claim is that Hoever came into the season thinking he and Semedo were on a par.

That simply hasn’t proven to be the case, with Hoever having made just four Premier League starts so far.

Hoever is delusional if that claim is true

If Hoever really thought he would be coming into the season on a par with Semedo, he was sorely mistaken. Semedo actually finished last season quite strongly.

He needs to be realistic. £29 million signing Semedo is a top player, who has lots of experience and has prowess at international level.

Hoever is a young player, who needs to work to push the 28-year-old.

He needs to be ready for when chances do come his way, and it seems with this episode he hasn’t prepared as best he could.
