Julen Lopetegui shares what new signing Matheus Cunha can bring for Wolves ahead of likely debut vs Aston Villa

Julen Lopetegeui says new signing Mathues Cunha will be in the squad to face Aston Villa tomorrow.

Wolves are back in Premier League action and are looking to start 2023 off in the right way.

2022 ended disappointingly, with Wanderers losing their final game 1-0 at home to Manchester United.

It was a spirited display from Wolves and a point would have been deserved. But Lopetegui’s side were punished for not being clinical enough, and by one very in-form player in Marcus Rashford.

Lopetegui will be hoping to see his players bounce back, and he’ll be looking to get one over on fellow countryman Unai Emery, whom he’s faced several times in Spain.

Lopetegui will be able to call on Wolves’ newest signing Cunha for the game, and the head coach has said that he will indeed be in the matchday squad.

The Brazilian has trained with his new teammates, and is good to go.

The capacity in which he will feature though, remains to be seen. Plenty of fans will hope he starts.

Lopetegui spoke about Cunha today at his pre-match press conference, and offered some insight on what kind of player the club have brought in.

He said (via Wolves official): “He’s a forward, of course, but it depends on our way to play, he can play in the middle as an attacking forward, as a second forward or maybe in the wing. We are going to change depending on the situation with him. But that’s normal for the kinds of players we have.

“Hee-chan (Hwang) for example, he’s played in different positions and is, more or less, this kind of player.

“He’s a good player. All good players can provide good skills and good strengths for the team. He’s a very balanced player; he’s very physical but he’s also a very technical player. He has good technical skills, but we can also take advantage of his strengths as a footballer.”

Matheus Cunha can reinvigorate Wolves’ attack, he should start against Aston Villa

Lopetegui is making Cunha out to be a really complete player, which is exciting.

If he’s technical and physical, then he should be a good fit for the Premier League.

That said, similar things were said about Goncalo Guedes when he signed last summer. The winger has had a really poor start so far at Molineux. But he could now dramatically improve following the arrival of Lopetegui.

Wolves fans will hope Cunha can hit the ground running quickly, starting against Aston Villa tomorrow.

It would be great to see him start. Diego Costa just hasn’t cut it recently and Raul Jimenez doesn’t have the match sharpness currently.
