Express & Star journalist Liam Keen has allayed injury fears about Wolves star Matheus Cunha, after the player made a worrying Instagram post at the weekend.
Cunha was part of Wolves’ squad against Newcastle United. But the Brazilian did not get on at St. James’ Park.
Some fans were surprised to see Julen Lopetegui leave the club’s record signing on the bench.
The manager sent on Pedro Neto at half-time. He then turned to Matheus Nunes, Hwang Hee-chan, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Nathan Collins in the second-half.
Cunha only recently returned from injury for Wolves.
He was stretchered off against Fulham, but the injury was not serious.
He was ruled out of the game with Liverpool. But he returned to get a cameo in the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Some anticipated he would actually start against Newcastle on Sunday. It was something Wolves legend Steve Bull wanted to see.
But Lopetegui overlooked him and after the game, Cunha made a slightly worrying post on Instagram.
The day after the defeat to Newcastle, Cunha’s Instagram Story showed his foot in a protective support.
Journalist Keen explained the situation on the latest Express & Star podcast: “The Instagram… he re-posted it. A friend posted it to their Story and he re-posted it to his own Story. As soon as you do that, it worries people!
“The first thing I will say is going to worry people, it’s not an old video, it’s a recent video. So that’s going to worry people. But I’m here to calm you down hopefully.
“So he picked up what they feared was a bad injury at Fulham. Turns out he was fine and he missed one game. So it’s to do with that. He’s having to manage the injury basically. take the load off the ankle at times and just manage it. He should be fine, they’re not expecting him to be out injured.
“They’re expecting him to still be fine for Saturday (vs Leeds United), provided there’s no issues this week. So it looks worse than it is, but he’s just managing the load on the ankle.”
Liam Keen’s update on Matheus Cunha is a relief after worrying Instagram post, Wolves need the Brazilian
So it looks like Cunha hasn’t had a setback or anything and he is simply just managing the injury he picked up against Fulham.
He did get minutes against Spurs and was then part of the squad to face Newcastle, so that does suggest there isn’t anything to worry about.
But hopefully there will be no setbacks in the week leading up to the Leeds clash.
Wolves need to be able to call on Cunha.
He may not have scored for Wolves yet. But he has shown great link-up play at times and could potentially do well play if he is allowed to build an understanding with Raul Jimenez.
