Jose Sa’s Rob Edwards admission isn’t a great reflection on former Wolves boss Vitor Pereira

Jose Sa has been reflecting on what has rather been a season of two halves for Wolves, and touched on life under both Rob Edwards and Vitor Pereira.

Wolves’ recent improvement has been visible in the table, but the shift behind it has come from inside the dressing room rather than just the pitch.

Results have started to move, and performances have stabilised, but the underlying reason sits with how the squad is responding to its current manager.

The squad endured a torrid spell at the start of the season under Vitor Pereira, who failed to win a single game before he was sacked in November.

Rob Edwards replaced the Portuguese and after a tough first couple of months, performances started to improve in a way that suggests more than a simple run of form.

Things have been much more positive, and goalkeeper Sa has reflected on the difference between life under Edwards and Pereira.

Sa – who is reportedly set to leave this summer – has provided the clearest insight into what has changed, speaking openly about the atmosphere within the squad.

In a long read on the official Wolves website, he said: “I have to be with them (teammates), and I can’t let myself get down. I have to try to help them when they need it. But Rob has helped us a lot.

“We had a difficult period, but with Rob we seem more happy. I’m not saying that we weren’t happy with Vitor, but it was difficult. We are working well.

“Rob is a good coach, he’s very connected with us, and we are working as best as we can and we are winning points, not as many as we need, but we are winning points.”

Previously another Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone had suggested that things had been swept under the carpet when Pereira was at the helm, suggesting all wasn’t really that well.

Wolves results and culture improvement under Edwards

Wolves have taken 15 points under Edwards now since he came in, after getting just two on the board under Pereira.

That swing reflects a team that has moved from struggling to compete, to consistently collecting points.

Sa says the players are happy again under Edwards, and that corroborates with a claim that was made recently that the culture is the best it’s been at Wolves in years.

Despite being in a very difficult situation, Edwards has done his level best to improve things behind the scenes, and clearly it’s had an impact given results and performances.
