A clip of Jorgen Strand Larsen and Matt Hobbs makes for painful viewing, after Crystal Palace won the Conference League.

The season has ended in misery for Wolves fans, with the club suffering relegation from the top-flight.

Wanderers are now preparing for the Championship after eight years in the Premier League, and the hope is that it will just be a one-season stay. But it will be far from easy to get promoted at the first time of asking.

It’s now official – Wolves are relegated from the Premier League after an eight-season stay… 🚨😔

Wanderers fans, where has it all gone wrong and who is to blame the most?!

Wolves were in such a good position only a few years ago.

Even initially after the exit of Nuno Espirito Santo, there was belief that Wolves could achieve more success in the Premier League.

There were even positive moments when Julen Lopetegui and Gary O’Neil were in charge.

But Wolves are now a million miles away from enjoying the success they did in those early years of Fosun’s ownership.

Two years ago, Wolves signed Jorgen Strand Larsen from Celta Vigo.

The Norway international arrived on an initial loan, and he would go on to enjoy a brilliant term in 2024/25, scoring 14 non-penalty goals in the Premier League for Wolves.

Wolves actually documented Strand Larsen’s first day at Compton, and filmed a conversation between him and Matt Hobbs, which now makes for difficult viewing.

Strand Larsen tells the then-sporting director that he was left impressed by the passion of the team in the previous season.

And Hobbs can then be heard telling the striker: “Have a push for Europe, that’s the plan.”

Wolves went on to finish 16th that season, with Vitor Pereira replacing O’Neil and keeping the club safe. And of course this time around, Wolves have now dropped into the Championship.

Ironically, both Hobbs and Strand Larsen have not only ended up pushing for Europe, but the duo have their hands on actual silverware after Palace defeated Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Leipzig.

Wolves’ fortunes may have been different had they kept Hobbs

Hobbs left Wolves in the summer of 2025 as part of a restructure by the club.

The role of sporting director was dissolved, and Domenico Teti came in as ‘director of professional football’, to work closely with Pereira, whom he already knew well.

This move ultimately turned out to be a disaster, with Wolves’ recruitment a major reason behind the club’s struggles.

Hobbs made some errors during his time as the sporting director, but he helped to bring some great players to the club.

He was also reportedly keen to sign the likes of Harry Wilson and David Brooks, two players who both impressed at Fulham and Bournemouth respectively in 2025/26.

He surely would have done a better job with the recruitment than Teti and Pereira did.
