Joao Gomes set to make his 100th Wolves appearance but Vitor Pereira is not satisfied

Wolves’ match against Burnley is of huge importance to Vitor Pereira, and of special significance to Joao Gomes.

It’s the Brazilian’s 100th appearance in the Old Gold colours, and a game that has been appropriately classed as a must-win for Pereira hosting Burnley.

Wolves can no longer afford to drop points, and especially against a newly promoted side. Sunderland was pain enough.

There have been murmurings of discontent with Pereira around Wolves this week, only fuelling the importance of Sunday’s clash. The Wolves boss wants his players on top form, spurring him to throw some words of ‘encouragement’ in the way of Gomes.

Vitor Pereira looking for a reaction from Joao Gomes

There’s no denying Gomes was not good against Sunderland. In fact, it was as poor as we’ve seen from him.

Pereira, realising the importance of having Gomes on it, has aimed some honest words at his midfielder, saying: “He has a lot of qualities but he knows he needs to improve. Shots outside the box, the long pass and tactically he can be better.”

No mincing of words from the manager. It’s a compliment to Gomes that he’s held to this standard. He has been top quality since arriving at Molineux.

If Pereira is to get the result Wolves desperately need, the midfield will be all-important.

Vitor Pereira’s crucial midfield decision

In this new-look formation, most of the positions pick themselves. But the midfield three deployed against Sunderland was mostly ineffective.

There is the possibility of playing Fer Lopez as a 10, leaving two to lie deeper and provide protection.

That means dropping one of Gomes, Andre or Marshall Munetsi. That’s a tough call between three players favoured by Pereira, but there needs to be a statement of intent at home to a relegation rival. A more front-footed approach.

Pereira needs to pick an attacking Wolves XI and take the game to Burnley. All eyes will be on the Portuguese coach on Sunday.
