Joao Gomes gives emotional response after Vitor Pereira’s gesture vs Leeds United

Joao Gomes has been a revelation since moving to Wolves, impressing fans with his technical ability and on-field intelligence.

However, he hasn’t started this season at the same level as last term and knows he must return to top form.

After the Leeds United defeat, Gomes took to social media to issue a rallying cry to supporters.

The Brazilian came off the bench against Everton in the Carabao Cup and grabbed an assist to help secure the victory.

Despite Wolves’ heavy defeat against Leeds, the midfielder was left touched by one gesture from manager Vitor Pereira.

Joao Gomes felt ‘pride’ after wearing the armband against Leeds United

With captain Nelson Semedo having left, Gomes is now part of Wolves’ leadership group.

The fan favourite has wowed supporters with his incredible maturity for his age as well as his performances on the pitch.

Despite this, Pereira has demanded that Wolves’ leaders step up to avoid another relegation battle.

Gomes was handed the captaincy for the match against Leeds when Toti Gomes came off, and speaking to Globo Esporte, he reflected on the affection he’s received at the club and described the moment as a personal highlight.

He said: “I receive a lot of affection here at Wolves, from the fans, the staff and everyone at the club. I always try to give my best, whether in training or in games.

“By dedicating myself, I know I’m closer to delivering my best. Receiving the captain’s armband was a source of pride and a big responsibility.”

Why Gomes is a natural leader

Gomes is widely regarded as a future permanent Wolves captain, not just a member of the leadership group.

He is one of the team’s most consistent performers and sets a standard for younger players to follow.

His excellent on-field connection with teammates makes him central to Wolves’ play as a midfielder.

Having recently signed a new five-year deal, he is committed to the club and therefore the Molineux faithful are hoping that he doesn’t leave the club anytime soon.

With his best years ahead, he is unlikely to be weighed down by the responsibilities of captaincy, making him a perfect long-term leader.
