Jamie Carragher has suggested the huge lure of the Premier League helped Julen Lopetegui decide to come and manage Wolves.
The Spaniard has now been in charge for three months at Molineux.
Things are now starting to come together, with Saturday’s 3-0 win over Liverpool the highlight of the season.
Lopetegui has come in and instilled new belief and optimism.
He has raised fitness levels, improved organisation and regularly shown excellent tactical prowess.
All this was perhaps to be expected.
Lopetegui is a manager with a fine reputation and lots of pedigree.
Today, a new video dropped on The Overlap YouTube channel, and there was some talk about Wolves under Lopetegui.
Jamie Carragher offered his thoughts about how Wolves were able to land the 56-year-old.
He said (17:50): “It just tells us how big the Premier League is.
“There’s only 20 jobs in there. Wolves I think when he came in were bottom of the league or second-bottom.
“He’s managed Spain, he’s managed Real Madrid, he’s won Europa Leagues with Sevilla. This is like a manager who’s got so much experience and so much quality as well.”
The pull of the Premier League is huge, but Lopetegui knows how much Wolves wanted him
Lopetegui had dreamt of managing in the Premier League. Like a lot of managers do.
But it goes a bit deeper than just that.
He spoke when he first joined about feeling wanted by Wanderers, who had shown a lot of respect for his personal situation. He said: “They have showed a big respect for my personal situation, and after they wanted a lot for me to be here. I feel this respect, they insisted a lot, and now I am here, and I am very happy to be here.”
He also mentioned about Wolves wanting him years ago.
Wolves are certainly very lucky to have someone of Lopetegui’s quality, and it’s exciting to think where the club might be heading with him at the helm.
