Jamie Carragher delivers South Bank verdict after Wolves’ loss to Burnley

Wolves were beaten 3-2 by Burnley on Sunday – and Jamie Carragher gave his thoughts about the unsavoury scenes that unfolded after the full-time whistle.

Wolves lost to the Clarets in frustrating fashion, conceding right at the death to Lyle Foster.

The team had done well to get back into the contest, having played extremely poorly in the first-half. But Wolves could not make their second-half dominance pay, and Burnley snatched all three points.

There were then some ugly scenes.

The players went over to an angry South Bank to acknowledge fans, as did Vitor Pereira.

Jorgen Strand Larsen could be seen having an exchange with some, and Pereira appeared to get riled up. The Wolves manager later said that he felt his players needed support.

But the anger from the fans is completely understandable. It’s been a shocking start to the new season, and the supporters are well within their rights to react like that, given how much money they are being charged by the club.

It was a very bad look for the football club though, and Jamie Carragher gave his thoughts about the situation.

Jamie Carragher thinks Wolves players lingered too long

The game itself has almost become secondary to what happened afterwards.

Pereira being dragged away by stewards has been the main focus, but there was also an exchange between Jose Sa and some Wolves fans outside Molineux, which has received some media attention.

That said, Sa has been praised by many Wolves fans for fronting up.

It was a day that summed up just how angry the Wolves fans have become, and some fear things will only get worse.

Following Sunday’s scenes, Jamie Carragher gave his take – and he believes the Wolves players should have got themselves inside quicker.

He said (via Sky Sports): “You should always show respect to the supporters by going over win or lose but incidents like these are happening more now and all that will happen in a couple of hours is that the players will apologise on social media.

“Jarrod Bowen did it for West Ham in the Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves. Yes, players should go over but don’t stay there too long. Passions are running high for everybody, especially people in the stands and that leads to incidents like this one.”

Wolves fans well within their rights to vent

Maybe the players and Pereira should have headed to the dressing room sooner than they did.

The decision to go over there was well-intentioned. As Carragher says, it’s important to acknowledge supporters, especially after awful results.

But perhaps to avoid the situation becoming a bigger story they all should have got out of there relatively quickly. It was clear to see that those in the South Bank were absolutely furious.

Wolves now have a game against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and the quick turnaround offers the chance to improve the mood going into the Premier League game with Fulham.

But another defeat tomorrow night at Molineux could lead to even more toxicity.
