Wolves U23s manager James Collins has insisted ‘we’ve got to play better than that’, following last night’s 2-1 win over Fulham.
The youth team managed to pick up three more points at Aggborough in PL2 Division 2.
It was a great result for the youngsters, as Fulham were top of the league before kick-off.
It was Owen Hesketh who opened the scoring after brilliant work from Chem Campbell to drive up the field.
Hesketh then turned provider for Campbell, who finished with aplomb in the second-half.
Fulham pulled one back through Sonny Hilton who scored direct from a corner.
But Wolves held out for the victory.
The scoreline perhaps flattered Wolves, and Collins has given his honest verdict about the game.
He told the club’s official website: “But we’ve got to set standards, and they’ve got to perform and play better than that. Yes, it’s great to get the three points, and credit to them for that, and credit to us, but I want us to play better than that, and they expect themselves to play better than that.
“I spoke to Luke Cundle on the way off the pitch and he was almost laughing about the fact we got away with one there. We got away with a poor performance and won. It’s a nice feeling, but we’ve got to play better than that.”
Collins sends the right message
While it is good that Wolves were able to grind out the win, it is important that Collins has told it how it is.
A good manager will not sugar-coat things, and Collins clearly wants more from his talented young players.
It is about embedding that perfectionist mentality.
Hopefully the players will respond in the right way and be much improved for the next game against Sunderland, and perhaps there can be a great margin of victory to send a message to the other teams in the league.
