Jackson Tchatchoua could be set to wear Wolves shirt number that’s not been seen since 2017

Wolves are almost over the line with a deal for Hellas Verona right-back Jackson Tchatchoua, and if he sticks with his current number, it’ll be a first at Wolves in almost eight years.

The transfer of Jackson Tchatchoua has progressed quickly, going from an announcement of interest on Thursday morning to a bid accepted in the evening, and a medical booked that night.

It’s a nice change of pace from how Wolves have moved for most of the window.

Tchatchoua will reportedly sign a five-year deal with the club, earning about £36,000 per week.

Upon his arrival, the 23-year-old will have a decision to make on what number to choose at his new club.

Jackson Tchatchoua’s number 38 hasn’t been used at Wolves since Oskar Buur in 2017

Meticulous browsing of the internet did not reveal the reason for Tchatchoua using the number 38, but it’s certainly not a common choice.

The last Wolves player to appear donning that jersey was Danish defender Oskar Buur, in one of his six appearances in five years at the club. That was all the way back in 2017/18, in a 1-0 EFL Cup win over Bristol Rovers.

Shirts 1-11 are all taken at Wolves this season, with David Moller Wolfe snapping up the number 6 jersey just a few weeks ago.

That may lead Tchatchoua to an easy decision, to continue with 38 until something a bit more conventional becomes available.

Wolves now have four right wing-backs in the squad

You might be surprised to hear the numbers Wolves have in the right flank of defence, given the amount of discourse around needing reinforcement in that position.

The reality is that all three players who were here last season are unproven in a major role in the team. Rodrigo Gomes and Ki-Jana Hoever aren’t much younger than Tchatchoua, but neither is convincing as a starter.

This could lead Wolves to send out the fourth man, Pedro Lima, on loan.

Fans have wanted a Lima loan this summer, as the 20-year-old could do with more minutes, perhaps in the Championship.

He absolutely looks like a player for Wolves’ future, but there are areas for the Brazilian to improve in. A loan move would be perfect, both for the player and for the club. Make it happen.
