Irish media give verdict on Matt Doherty’s performance v Greece

Matt Doherty was in action last night for Ireland in a 2-0 defeat to Greece.

A poor display from the ‘Boys in Green’ left Ireland with just three points throughout qualification ahead of their last game v Gibraltar.

Matt Doherty has been named among those responsible for the defeat with dubious defending in the first half effectively ending the game.

A disappointing result for the national team and for Doherty, but it was important that he got minutes in the legs.

But how did the Irish media react to his display? We had a look…

Matt Doherty disappoints against Greece

The Irish News wrote: “Doherty looked 60 per cent fit against Greece.” While scoring him 4/10.

While Balls IE gave another bad review of the defender: “Doherty was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty after tangling with a Greek player in the Irish box. He linked up well with Ogbene down the right flank at times, although his final ball completely deserted him in dangerous areas far too often.

“He also didn’t cover himself in glory with his defending for the Greece second goal. His lack of impact continued in the second half, with the Wolves man looking very much like a player who has lacked minutes this season.” They also gave Doherty a 4/10 rating.

Irish Independent also weren’t impressed describing Doherty’s “ponderous play at both ends”.

More game-time for Wolves needed

Doherty hasn’t been used for Wolves this season and that should change.

As fixtures mount up, we see no reason why Gary O’Neil shouldn’t utilise him more to get his fitness back to a good level.

Even at centre-back in a back three he would be an excellent option for Wolves.

So hopefully next time he goes on international duty, he impresses and isn’t criticised for his lack of match fitness.
