Irish fans have a lot to say about Wolves’ Matt Doherty after his international display vs Hungary

Matt Doherty has been a long-standing servant for Wolves, making 377 appearances in the black and gold over two stints.

When it comes to the Republic of Ireland, he has pulled on the green and white of his nation 52 times and on Saturday evening, he started once again for his country.

It is clear that Matt Doherty is an experienced player, and when it comes to the big games, he should be one of the most composed on the pitch.

Vitor Pereira trusts him, and recently put Doherty into his leadership group for this season.

However, his latest appearance for the national team resulted in the Irish press blasting Doherty for his display on Saturday night.

And when it comes to the supporters, they all had the same reaction to the Wolves defender’s performance.

It may have turned out to be a night to remember for fans of the Republic of Ireland as they clawed back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Hungary.

However, one thing they also are not forgetting is the performance of Matt Doherty.

Fans have been extremely vocal on social media about the Wolves player, and the comments don’t bode well for him.

One fan said, ‘If last night taught us anything Matt Doherty can’t ever play for Ireland again.’

Meanwhile another said, ‘What a night. Matt Doherty needs be dropped though. That lad can’t overlap, underlap, defend, create, press or pass.’

One Irish fan said this of Doherty, ‘If we have any chance of qualifying for the World Cup, we HAVE to stop playing Matt Doherty.’

A similar sentiment was shared by this supporter saying, ‘I can’t say this enough times, Matt Doherty should not be starting games for Ireland he’s an absolute liability.’

Doherty’s form comes at a terrible time for Wolves, as they have three massive fixtures coming up when the international break ends.

Matt Doherty’s international form is the last thing Wolves need

One thing that will worry Vitor Pereira is that the two goals Ireland conceded came from mistakes that Doherty had made.

The first goal came from Doherty being way too relaxed and jogging back into the defensive line. This kept the Hungarian goalscorer onside.

The second was scored from a corner that Doherty needlessly conceded.

Pereira has already spoken about Agbadou’s errors this season, and Wolves have conceded quite a lot of goals due to individual mistakes.

The very last thing they need is one of their most experienced players to start becoming sloppy, and giving away the ball cheaply.

They need their leaders to step up, and drive the team as they face a likely relegation fight this season.
