‘If I’m being honest’: Paul Merson thinks he knows what is going to happen in Wolves vs Aston Villa – Chris Sutton disagrees though

Wolves are preparing for arguably their biggest match of the season to date.

The Old Gold are winless in their last five Premier League matches and sit inside the relegation zone as a result.

And things aren’t about to get any easier. Next up for Vitor Pereira is a fierce Midlands derby against rivals Aston Villa at Molineux.

Paul Merson worried for Wolves

Despite playing at home, Wolves will be the game’s underdogs.

Their chances of taking anything off Villa have been made worse by Joao Gomes’ suspension after he was sent off against Arsenal last weekend.

And Paul Merson thinks Unai Emery’s Villains will have too much about them for Wolves to cause an upset.

“Like I said before, it’s a big week for teams at the bottom of the table. If Ipswich and Leicester win, Wolves are in serious trouble,” he wrote in his Sportskeeda column.

“There is also the possibility of Tottenham potentially being dragged into the mix, so that’s one more team for Wolves to catch in this race! I’m starting to worry for them if I’m being honest.

“Aston Villa capped off an incredible Champions League return by securing direct qualification into the knockout stages with their win against Celtic. The likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich, PSG and Real Madrid finishing behind Villa shows how good they were in this round.”

Merson’s final score prediction is Wolves 1 Aston Villa 2.

Fellow pundit Chris Sutton believes the outlook for Wolves is a lot brighter though.

Chris Sutton expecting points to be shared

Even though many fans will be fearing the worst given both sides’ form, Sutton thinks there is reason for Wolves fans to be optimistic.

Despite Villa scoring in every Premier League match since Boxing Day, Sutton has tipped Wolves’ forwards to match their rivals in front of goal.

“Morgan Rogers was absolutely superb against Celtic and is an exciting talent. But while Villa have got goals in them, I am just not sure they will keep Wolves out,” he told BBC Sport.

“Villa have not won any of their past six games straight after a Champions League tie, and I don’t see this week being any different. Wolves are on a horrible run of four successive league defeats, with 10 goals conceded and just one scored, so even a draw would be a boost for Vitor Pereira’s side.

“Pereira must also be worried about losing his main goalscorer, Matheus Cunha, before the transfer window shuts on Monday. I am not sure whether Cunha will stay, but I think Wolves will get a point here.”

Sutton thinks Saturday’s match will end 2-2 with the points shared.
