‘I’d be gutted’: Dave Edwards desperately hopes Wolves keep hold of 26-year-old

Former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards is hoping the club keep hold of Max Kilman this summer.

The central defender has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks.

Wolves are trying to balance the books with player sales.

Three big names have already departed in Ruben Neves, Conor Coady and Nathan Collins.

And Kilman has been mentioned as a possible outgoing.

It is thought Wolves have been holding out for around £35 million. But there have been suggestions that the club are ready to hand him a new deal and make him one of the top earners at the club.

Dave Edwards really hopes Wolves keep Max Kilman

Edwards has a new column out in the Express & Star, and the Kilman speculation is the main focus.

In his eyes, Wanderers have a potential top player on their hands.

He reckons that the club would be better served retaining the 26-year-old rather than cashing in.

He said: “I really hope Wolves are in a position to be able to keep Max Kilman at the club.

“If it’s not a necessity to sell him, I really do think they should keep him – unless a silly offer comes in. I think if Wolves get offered £35million-£40million, that’s where Kilman’s value is. I don’t think that’s Wolves getting a great deal.

“I also don’t think they can go out and get a player with the same potential as Max for that sort of price.

“They could spread the money around and bring in a few players for more depth, but I’d be gutted if Max went.

“His consistency levels for a young defender over the last three years has been exceptional. He’s very calm, calculated, comes out of defence with the ball really well.”

Kilman can become a top Premier League centre-half

We shall see what happens with Kilman but for the moment it looks like there’s more chance of him staying than going, which is a big positive.

Kilman wasn’t quite as good last season as he was in 2021/22.

But he definitely improved once Craig Dawson came in alongside him.

Potentially, he could be fantastic from the off in 2023/24 if Dawson is going to be his regular partner.

Kilman definitely has the potential to become a top centre-half in the Premier League.

He’s been playing regularly in the division for two years now and has managed to build his experience to a good level.

His is technically fantastic. It’s just about him becoming a bit more dominant, which is something Steve Davis suggested.
