‘I knew’: 21-year-old Wolves star unsurprised over lack of game time at Molineux so far

Tommy Doyle has been speaking about settling in at Wolves – and has said he isn’t surprised to have featured fairly little so far.

Wanderers go into the international break with eight points from eight games in the Premier League.

It has been a decent start for Gary O’Neil, who obviously came in at a very late stage.

He has steadied the ship somewhat after the departure of Julen Lopetegui.

And the manager has been turning to mostly the same players in these opening weeks – especially in midfield.

Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes have started every game so far in the league, meaning there hasn’t been much of a chance for Doyle since his loan move from Manchester City.

But Doyle is unconcerned by this, as he told Wolves Weekly…

He came on for the final quarter of an hour against Liverpool.

And then he got a very short cameo against Luton Town.

He did start the 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Ipswich Town though and played 74 minutes.

Regarding his minutes so far, Doyle said: “It’s fine, I knew that would be the case. I didn’t have a pre-season really, and I had a little injury from the Euros so, I knew.

“Obviously I need to get myself back up to pace and get to the level, which I’m continuing to do so. Hopefully soon I can start getting some more minutes.”

Doyle will gain prominence at Wolves

It makes sense that Doyle hasn’t had much of a look in yet at Wolves.

His arrival at the club came about quite late and, as he says, he didn’t really have a pre-season having been away with the England U21s at the Euros.

But Doyle will see more involvement at Wolves eventually. He is too talented a young player not to.

He’s a midfielder who likes to get on the ball and make things happen with his excellent passing range.

O’Neil wants his side to have more of the ball and Doyle is player who should fit into the manager’s tactical plans.
