‘I just worry’… Paul Scholes offers one reason why Matheus Cunha may not succeed at Manchester United

Matheus Cunha leaving Wolves this summer is a very distinct possibility.

Wolves have secured their Premier League safety for another season, and Matheus Cunha played a big part in that achievement.

Cunha recently reached 15 goals in the Premier League, which saw him equal the record for a Brazilian player in a single campaign.

The likelihood is that Cunha is now playing his final games for Wolves.

It’s been reported in recent days that Cunha has reached an agreement to join Manchester United, who have been on his tail for some time.

United have apparently offered Cunha a five-year contract, and seemingly the move is close to being finalised for the summer.

It would certainly be an interesting move, and now former United midfielder Paul Scholes has shared his honest thoughts about the potential transfer.

United see Cunha as an ideal signing to make this summer.

This season they have struggled to score goals and are in clear need of some firepower.

And United play the same system under Ruben Amorim as Wolves do under Vitor Pereira, and want Cunha to operate in that same left number 10 role.

Gary Neville recently backed Man United’s move for Cunha, but Scholes isn’t too sure he would actually be a hit – mainly because of the deep-lying issues at Old Trafford.

He said in a recent TNT Sports column: “Matheus Cunha is obviously athletic, and he’s got quality with goals this season.

“I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute. It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go. The quality of play right now is so poor.”

Cunha move to Man United could go one of two ways

If Cunha does join United this summer then it will be fascinating to see how he fares.

On paper, and from a positional perspective, it should work. United’s system is very similar to Wolves’ and Cunha should not need much time to bed in.

Appearances – 32
Minutes played – 2575
Goals – 17
Assists – 6

But we have all seen the problems United have had in recent years.

Wolves’ system works really well because there are workhorses throughout the team, and they allow Cunha – who is not so known for his work-rate – to flourish and work his magic.

The move may also not work out as expected with the weight of expectation heavier and the spotlight much harsher at Old Trafford than Molineux.
