‘I can only see’: Pundit reacts to Wolves farce and delivers 2023/24 prediction

Andy Townsend expressed his concerns for Wolves this morning, with Julen Lopetegui reportedly on the brink of leaving the club.

Many Wolves fans have gone from genuine optimism, after the fantastic win over Rennes on Saturday, to dejection.

Lopetegui looked like he would be staying at the club only a few weeks ago.

But then he sat down with Guillem Balague to again express his frustrations about the club’s financial situation.

Two weeks on from that, we are now talking about Lopetegui as pretty much gone from the club.

Gary O’Neil is reportedly in line to replace him.

Quite a few people are looking at Wolves and thinking that they will struggle this season. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher is one of those.

And Townsend also predicts troubling times ahead for Wanderers.

Natalie Sawyer and Townsend were taking calls from fans, and they heard from Wolves Fancast broadcaster Richard Hobbs.

For pundit Townsend, Wolves are now in a precarious position.

He told Hobbs: “Clearly, there is a situation there now where he’s obviously very disappointed that he’s not getting anything like the sort of funds (he thought he’d get).

“The job description is nothing like what the brochure initially said. We’ll see whether he stays or goes but again, with some of the players you’ve had leaving and very little coming back through the door, I’ve got big concerns for you again this season, I really have.

“If they can get a couple of wins in the first four or five (games) just to settle everyone down, who knows. But I can only see Wolves in and around the bottom six for most of the season.”

Wolves will do well to survive relegation

Wolves fans could not have asked for worse preparation going into the new season. It is truly a farcical situation.

Lopetegui is going, and the squad has been significantly weakened to try and balance the books.

While it is still a decent Premier League starting XI, the depth just isn’t there for Wolves.

And now, the club must try and press ahead without making new signings. Or at least, without spending money on top quality players. That is also likely to be the case in January.

Whoever comes in to replace Lopetegui, and it looks like it will be O’Neil, they will have an absolutely huge job on their hands.
