‘I already knew’: Nasser Djiga reveals why he turned down Galatasaray in favour of Deadline Day Wolves move

Wolves welcomed Nasser Djiga during the January transfer window. The young defender was the club’s second Deadline Day signing.

Vitor Pereira wanted to bring in a new centre-back to help revolutionise the way the Old Gold play out from the back.

Wolves’ first signing was Emmanuel Agbadou, and the Ivorian will be joined at the back by Djiga, who joined on a five-and-a-half-year contract from Red Star Belgrade.

Nasser Djiga only wanted Wolves

Although Wolves won the race for the talented 22-year-old, they weren’t the only club in the running.

Djiga turned down the chance to join Galatasaray and was also a target for Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

And speaking about why he chose the Old Gold, Djiga has revealed the lure of Molineux was too good to turn down.

“For me, when I received the offer from Wolves, there was no hesitation – I already knew it was the best choice for me,” he told the Wolves official website.

“Also, I had always dreamed of playing in the Premier League. I think the Premier League is the best league in the world.”

These are ambitious words from a player so young and inexperienced at this level. His commitment and desire to represent the club will certainly go down well among supporters.

Preparing for debut

Unlike Marshall Munetsi, who also arrived on Deadline Day, Djiga has yet to make his debut.

And after learning Wolves are in talks to terminate Craig Dawson’s contract, Djiga, who is the first player from Burkina Faso to play for Wolves, is unsurprisingly raring to go.

“I am really eager to start this new chapter with Wolves,” he added.

“Playing in the Premier League has always been a dream, and joining a big club like Wolves makes it even more special. “I can’t wait to get started.”

Wolves’ next match is an away Premier League tie against league leaders Liverpool on Sunday (Feb 16), and although Vitor Pereira may have some concerns, Djiga would definitely love to show what he can do against the country’s best.
