Hwang Hee-chan and his South Korea teammates were given a hero’s reception, as they touched down at Incheon airport on Wednesday.
The Wolves winger has flown back to his homeland with the rest of his international teammates, as well as manager Paulo Bento.
Korea were soundly beaten by Brazil on Monday night, meaning their journey in Qatar came to a sorry end.
Some naive tactics allowed Brazil to completely pick them apart, and the game was over by half-time.
Vinicius Jr, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta gave the Samba stars a 4-0 lead at the break.
Korea did pull one back in the second-half through Paik Sueng-ho, but it proved to nothing more than a consolation.
It was a real shame for Korea, who did so well to set up the tie after beating Portugal.
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, the Korea players were greeted at Incheon airport by a huge crowd.
It may have been a sorry end to the tournament. But there is recognition and pride in the fact Korea made it out of a really tough group.
According to Yonhap News Agency, ‘fans showed up holding signs for their favorite players, and the players in return gladly obliged their supporters requesting selfies or autographs’.
The publication say an estimated 1000 fans descended upon the airport, and that even staff ‘wielded their smartphone cameras as the players stepped off the plane and went through customs’.
Hwang took to Instagram today to share a sweet snap of him having visited relatives.
A great experience for Hwang Hee-chan, he must use it all to kick on at Wolves
It must have been a great feeling for Hwang to have returned home to such a reception. Especially as the player to have scored their most important goal at the tournament.
It has been really good to see him make a decisive impact for his country.
Anyone that has watched the recent FIFA documentary on Hwang will know that doing well with the national team means a lot to him.
Hopefully the whole experience can now serve as a big catalyst for Hwang.
He’s found things tough at Wolves in 2022. But his exploits in Qatar are a reminder of the quality he has.
Hopefully, Julen Lopetegui is able to get his arm around Hwang and help him to become consistent.
