Hugo Bueno has a theory about why Fer Lopez struggled at Wolves

Hugo Bueno believes Fer Lopez wasn’t helped at Wolves due to a combination of factors, including the team’s struggles as a collective.

Fer Lopez arrived at Wolves with real expectation behind him, seen as a young player capable of making a good impact despite his lack of minutes at senior level.

There was belief in his technical ability and confidence that he could adapt quickly to the demands of English football.

Early signs pointed to a player who had the tools to grow into a key figure, with the player enjoying a great pre-season.

But Lopez would find opportunities hard to come by at Molineux.

There was a clear pathway for Lopez to establish himself, particularly within a squad that has needed attacking quality. Opportunities have existed, but they weren’t taken.

In a new interview, Hugo Bueno has expressed his thoughts about why it hasn’t worked out for Lopez at Wolves, with the player currently out on loan at Celta Vigo.

Bueno had a good relationship with Lopez before the latter departed in January.

And the Spaniard has spoken about his fellow countryman in a new interview, with quotes being relayed by Mundo Deportivo.

He said: “Fer is a great player. He’s a very young boy who hasn’t played many games in professional football and it’s not easy to go to the Premier League, which is the most demanding league in the world.

“It is a very physical competition and different from what I was used to and that is why a period of adaptation is needed.

“In addition, the team’s situation did not help him and, when these types of conditions are against you, it is not easy.

“He is showing what a good player he is at Celta, and if it is not now, in the future he will give the level here or wherever.”

Since moving back to Celta, Lopez has made 11 appearances.

He’s scored one goal, which came against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League and drew big praise on social media for its brilliance.

From ‘superstar’ potential to limited impact at Wolves

There can be real sympathy with Lopez.

He arrived for a big fee, with Wolves arguably overpaying for a player who hadn’t actually had that much experience of senior football.

And Bueno makes a valid point about the team’s struggles as a collective. It’s hard for any young, new player to thrive when the environment is so tough.

But there is hope yet that Lopez will eventually become the top player Paul Grainger once tipped him to become.

Grainger is a former mentor of Lopez and at the time of his move to Wolves, suggested he felt he’d become a superstar the first time he worked with him. He said: “I have seen some of the best players in the world play football. I have never seen a footballer like him. He was literally incredible.

“From the first day, I knew he was going to be a superstar.

“I have already been to a couple of bookies to see if I could bet on him playing for Spain at the 2026 World Cup. I have no doubt that he will become an international footballer. There is nothing missing.”

It remains to be seen if Lopez can come back to Wolves and fulfill his potential. With relegation all but certain, his future is up in the air.
