How Wolves stars fared on international duty this week, including 4/10 disasterclass

Wolves had three senior players in action for their countries last night on international duty, with some figures having a far better night than others.

It’s been a memorable international break for a host of Wolves stars, with last night rounding up the final pieces of action away from domestic duties in the 2023/24 campaign.

Gary O’Neil will be eager to have his players back at Molineux and will be delighted to see his international stars return without injury, amid Wolves’ growing squad concerns.

With Aston Villa next up in the Premier League on Saturday evening, it will be a quick turnaround for those who have represented their countries, particularly those in action last night.

Here’s a roundup of the first team members that featured last night on international duty.

How Wolves players fared on international duty last night

Rayan Ait-Nouri in Algeria vs South Africa

Only one Wolves representative secured 90 minutes last night and that was man of the moment, Rayan Ait-Nouri

The left-back played from the start for Algeria against South Africa, in what was a thrilling 3-3 draw between the two sides.

In what has been a stellar season domestically for the 22-year-old, the versatile defender kept his high level of performance, as highlighted by statistics provided by Sofascore

Over the 90 minutes Ait-Nouri played in defence, the Wolves man saw plenty of action on the left side, winning eight ground duels, 100% of his aerial duels, making five interceptions and completing five dribbles, a shining performance as usual.

Joao Gomes in Brazil vs Spain

Unfortunately, it was a less glamorous evening for Joao Gomes, who saw his highs from the England game come crashing down against Spain.

The 23-year-old lasted only 45 minutes against Pablo Sarabia’s nation, earning a damning 4/10 match rating from GOAL in what was a disastrous showing for the midfielder.

Making only 12 touches on the ball, Gomes completed just six passes, won one of his six attempted ground duels, conceded three fouls and lost possession four times, via Sofascore

To make matters worse, the Wolves ace’s evening was clouded as he gave away a penalty however, he will be relieved to have seen his teammates earn a draw to see the match end 3-3.

Matt Doherty in Ireland vs Switzerland

Matt Doherty was called into action in Ireland’s 1-0 defeat to Switzerland, coming on from the bench to enjoy a 33-minute cameo.

The defender was influential in the second half despite Ireland’s loss, winning 100% of his aerial duels, making one tackle and one interception, as well as showing his strengths in possession, via Sofascore

Misplacing only two passes and registering one key pass rounded off a solid night for the Wolves man, who will be disappointed with the overall result.
