How Wolves may approach the January transfer window amid serious threat of relegation

Wolves are in a very precarious position to say the least, and journalist Liam Keen has now shared how the club may approach the January transfer window.

It has been a disastrous season so far, with Wolves sitting rock bottom of the Premier League table.

It’s just two points taken from the first 11 Premier League games, and Wolves have scored the fewest goals and conceded the most.

Are you confident Rob Edwards will help Wolves avoid relegation?

It’s a huge job, then, for new manager Rob Edwards, who recently replaced Vitor Pereira as head coach.

Edwards has drawn a lot of criticism for the move, with many feeling it was poor of him to leave Middlesbrough just months after joining them.

But Wolves were a dream job for Edwards, who returns to the club following stints as a player and coach.

Some feel Wolves are already down. And it has therefore been suggested that Wolves may have a January window to prepare for the future.

Journalist Liam Keen has now shared what may happen.

The Old Gold could do with strengthening in a number of positions in January.

A new central midfielder is on the agenda for Wolves, after the club didn’t sign one in the summer.

And Wolves may also seek to sign a new striker. Especially if Tolu Arokodare, who’s been linked with Fenerbahce, makes an early exit.

A new wide forward or number 10 has also been touted.

Liam Keen was speaking about Wolves’ potential approach on the E&S podcast earlier this week.

“We see from Matt Doherty and Rob Edwards, they’re talking specifically about the fact that ‘We can do this, we can stay up, we’re capable of doing it’. That is 100% the club’s mission or direction to start with. It’s the sense that, look we’ve got a new manager now. We’ve done it early enough that we can try and turn it around. It’s still possible, and that’s everyone’s aim.

“That will be the first thing. That Wolves want to stay up, and that’s how they’ll approach January – if they’re still in the conversations.

“But you have to look at this logically. And I think it’s pretty obvious to say, that if Wolves are cast adrift, if they’re still on very minimal points and are still struggling then they will likely approach January very differently. Because there’s no point in splurging and splashing the cash on something that’s doomed.

“Not that they’ll necessarily say that publicly, but that’s an obvious position to be in. If Wolves have given themselves a competitive opportunity and they’re in the conversation and they think they can stay up and can do this, and see some areas they think they can add to the squad, then they’ll do it.

“These next couple of months are going to be pretty massive really for how January is going to be.”

Wolves can’t get cut adrift

So Wolves’ January window is essentially going to be dictated by their position in the Premier League table.

Edwards has come in now and the hope is that he can get Wolves a bit closer to the other clubs by the time January rolls around.

Which position do Wolves need to prioritise in January?

We have seen before how Wolves have used the January window to make improvements and ultimately get out of trouble. The January 2023 window being the perfect example when the likes of Matheus Cunha, Joao Gomes, Mario Lemina and Craig Dawson all arrived.

However, if Wolves allow themselves to get cut adrift, the possibility of having a strong January for the here and now will be very low and as Keen says, it may become about preparing for the Championship.
