How Premier League history rates Wolves’ chance of survival after 13 games

Wolves have now gone 13 Premier League games without a win, and in that period they have amassed just two points.

It is one of the worst starts by a team in the history of the Premier League. Fortunately for the Old Gold, they are not last in this ranking, with Sheffield United only just about saving their blushes with one point from the opening 13 in 2020/2021.

However, the difference is minimal, and it is still quite the embarrassing and dismal start by the Wanderers. The enormity of the task at hand for Rob Edwards cannot be overstated.

That run of form has left Wolves in danger of matching a Terry Connor unwanted record from 2011/2012.

And now Premier League history has told a story of the chances of Edwards pulling Wolves out of the relegation zone by the time the season ends.

How many points will Wolves end up on this season?

Relegation is staring Wolves in the face, and despite a promising performance against Aston Villa, you might be hard-pressed to find three worse teams at the minute.

Rob Edwards’ side has a real lack of quality, and those issues can be addressed in January, but with the Molineux side already ten points off safety, the gap may already be too big when that transfer window rolls around.

Additionally, history does not paint a pretty picture for Wolves. Out of the 12 worst starts in the Premier League after 13 matches, there has only been one side that survived.

Newcastle picked up just six points after 13 games in the 2021/2022 season, but the arrival of Eddie Howe sparked a remarkable turnaround.

Are you confident Rob Edwards will help Wolves avoid relegation?

In the end the Toon would climb up the table, finishing in 11th place.

It is history that does not bode well for Wolves. Based on the 12 worst opening 13 matches, the Old Gold have just an 8% chance of survival.

But they could follow the Newcastle blueprint to turn things around.

Newcastle showed ambition to stay up in January window

Wolves need to invest big in the January window to have any chance of survival, as that was what saved Newcastle that season, who had just one win after 19 matches.

The Geordies went big that winter, and while the Old Gold may not have the same financial backing as Eddie Howe had, it is still a great example of how to turn things around.

Despite their position in the Premier League, they were able to buy some high-quality players.

The arrivals of Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, and Bruno Guimaraes were statements of intent and a clear sign by the higher-ups that Newcastle were fighting to maintain their Premier League status.

We are not asking Fosun to go out and buy a player like Bruno Guimaraes, as that would most likely be unobtainable, but there are certainly players who can make a similar impact.

Jeff Shi and Fosun have to invest, or else they have given Rob Edwards a task that was always doomed to fail.

And if they don’t, it will be another in a long list of Jeff Shi decisions that supporters may use against him.
