How long Rodrigo Gomes could be sidelined for after devastating Wolves surgery update

As if Wolves needed any more woes, news from Molineux is that Rodrigo Gomes will be out of action for some time, recovering from a groin injury.

Gomes has been one of Wolves‘ top performers this season, so hearing that he has had to undergo surgery on his groin is a real hammer-blow.

The injury to Gomes was picked up against Chelsea, and the last update we received was that Wolves were awaiting scan results.

No one expected the severity to be this high, but the latest information is pretty concrete.

Rodrigo Gomes will miss months after groin surgery

With AFCON just around the corner, Wolves need every available player they can get, and Gomes was set to play a key role over that period.

But there’s no chance of that happening, now.

As Liam Keen reports, Gomes has had surgery on the groin and is expected to be out for up to four months.

Devastating news for Wolves, and for whoever is coming in the door to replace Vitor Pereira.

The 22-year-old has been one of the three best players for Wolves this season, despite not getting a ton of minutes earlier in the campaign. Gomes missing that much time means all eyes will be on the impending Matt Doherty update.

Right-back could be a trouble area for Wolves during AFCON

With Gomes out and Jackson Tchatchoua jetting off to represent Cameroon at AFCON, it leaves Wolves extremely light on the right side of defence.

Ki-Jana Hoever has left Wolves fans disappointed on more than one occasion this season, and having to rely on him as a consistent starter doesn’t sound like an ideal situation.

Also during that Chelsea loss, Doherty went down with a knee issue, and we’re yet to hear if that is a serious one as well. The hope is that it’s not, and the Irishman will be able to share responsibilities with Hoever.

Wolves could do with a break after such a dismal start to the season, but it doesn’t look to be coming.

So many Wolves players will be missing for AFCON, and if December is more of the same results-wise, even Pep Guardiola would struggle to turn this season around.
