How 17 Premier League teams with Wolves’ record after four games fared

Wolves are in a bad spot in the Premier League, but they aren’t the first team to find themselves on zero points after four games.

While this is Wolves’ worst start to a campaign in 127 years, it’s actually quite a common occurrence in the Premier League.

Since the division’s inception in 1992, 17 teams have had the same start as Wolves, and the survival rate is actually higher than you would think.

Survival after opening with four losses almost 50/50 according to Premier League history

Of those previous 17, eight have survived while nine have gone down.

Not the worst odds.

A Premier League season is 38 games long, and losing four in a row isn’t the catastrophe it’s being painted as.

The problem is that it’s happening right at the start of the season, giving Vitor Pereira and Wolves an uphill battle to fight. The next five games are crucial, with Wolves facing all three promoted sides in that span.

If they can win at least three of the next five, the pressure will lift slightly and Wolves will back themselves to be lucky number nine. If they can’t find the results, it could be unlucky number ten.

Recent Premier League history is less kind

A 47% chance isn’t too bad at all. But if we look at just the last five seasons, only one team has managed to avoid the drop after such a start.

That was Everton last season, who clawed their way back up the table after a change in personnel at the helm. David Moyes brought them to an impressive 13th-place finish.

Fulham, Sheffield United, Luton and most recently, Southampton, were all relegated after losing their first four.

The lack of results has made it difficult to be positive about this Wolves side, but there is quality in there, and the performances seem to be slowly improving.

As new signings settle in, Pereira can figure out his strongest XI, and the hope is that results will follow.
