Gary O’Neil’s staggering managerial record against West Ham won’t fill Wolves fans with confidence

Wolves face a must-win battle with West Ham United on Monday night but history doesn’t read well for Gary O’Neil.

Wolves fans have lost trust in O’Neil, whose job is on the line at the London Stadium on week 15.

It was only last season that some thought O’Neil could lead Wolves to a European finish and now, the Old Gold sit four points below safety.

Julen Lopetegui’s job at West Ham is also under threat, making Monday night’s clash a Premier League blockbuster with some branding the event ‘El Sackico’.

Gary O’Neil’s managerial record against West Ham

Ahead of the must-win fixture, Paul Merson predicted West Ham will beat Wolves with the pressure firmly on both managers.

Lopetegui shared his sympathy for O’Neil ahead of kick-off at the London Stadium, tapping into his own struggles at Wolves.

Niceties between the two coaches will be abolished once the game commences, in what has the potential to be the last outing for both at their respective clubs.

Merson sees West Ham as the likely winners, and the pundit might have a point given how O’Neil has fared against the Hammers in the past.

Since taking charge of Bournemouth during the 2022/23 campaign, the Englishman has come up against the east Londoners four times in the Premier League – losing all four.

O’Neil has an aggregate score of 11-1 against West Ham as a manager, giving the boss a mountain to climb to save his Wolves career.

Form has to turn around against West Ham

Wolves have been told to control emotion against West Ham, which could prove to be difficult given the importance of the fixture.

There are plenty of other areas that the Old Gold can improve, one of which is defensively.

Wolves’ defensive record under O’Neil is one of the primary reasons that the manager’s job is at risk, sporting one of the worst defensive records from set-play in Europe.

There’s a lot that O’Neil has to resolve ahead of Monday night’s battle, starting and ending with his record against the Hammers.
