Gary O’Neil told he may have unlikely ace up his sleeve for Wolves’ game with Brentford, but he’s struggling

Wolves go to Brentford in the Premier League this weekend, and Gary O’Neil needs a win.

It has been a rough start for Wanderers so far, having lost five of their six games.

It’s been a very tough run of fixtures and people did not expect too much. However, many have been concerned with the way Wolves have not capitalised in games during promising periods.

The Brentford game is a chance to get three much needed points on the board.

The Bees have a host of injury problems at the moment and it’s an opportunity for Wolves to get at them at the Gtech Community Stadium.

O’Neil’s team selection, as ever, will be fascinating – but one man the manager might be considering starting is Hwang Hee-chan according to Andy Thompson.

It has not been a good start to the new season at all for Hwang.

One of the best players last term, the South Korean has really struggled so far in 2024/25 and has not made an impact in any of his appearances.

He did apparently have transfer interest from Marseille in the summer, and who knows if that may have affected him.

His poor form continued at the weekend, as he came off the bench against Liverpool and only managed to have four touches in the end.

Wolves have Brentford on Saturday and in this fixture last season, Hwang had a field day, scoring two goals in a 4-1 win for Wanderers.

He’s currently massively out of form, but former Molineux full-back Andy Thompson has suggested he might get some joy this weekend.

He said on Matchday Live Extra: “On that day, I think that was the best I’ve ever seen him play for us.

“He got two goals I think. Brentford didn’t have a clue where he was. He was running across the lines, the timing of his runs. But also, the passing to him. We had that movement up front, which caused them all kinds of problems.

“Hopefully he can (kick-start his season). With him going down there. That was probably the last time we saw Hwang as the player we thought ‘What have we got here?’

“Before he went to international duty I saw him and I thought ‘It’s a shame he’s going’, because Brentford didn’t have any idea how to deal with him.

“He got what 12 goals last year? It just shows the quality he’s got, but he doesn’t look anywhere near that at the minute. Is that because he needs a run in the side, who knows?”

Hwang cannot start against Brentford, despite past success

Hwang may have shone against Brentford in this fixture last season, but it would be highly questionable for O’Neil to start him on Saturday.

At the moment, Hwang really isn’t in good form at all.

He has been totally ineffective when he’s come on in recent games for Wanderers, so far now O’Neil needs to think about other options.

Carlos Forbs, Goncalo Guedes and Rodrigo Gomes should all be considered before Hwang at this moment in time.

We know O’Neil really likes the qualities Hwang brings. But while he is in this form it’s difficult to make a case for him to get minutes, even if the next game happens to be against a side he’s done well against previously.
